I do hope it gets recommissioned for a new series. This weeks special has been very entertaining.
There are changes and improvements I do hope they implement however:
- Lose the 'Ask the Host' lifeline - Jeremy doesn't even hazard a guess half the time and it renders the lifeline pretty useless.
- Improve the graphics - The question and money tree graphics are pretty shoddy.
- Rethink the 'money transfer' process - We've lost cheques to a quite lacklustre 'click of Jeremy's invisible mouse'. They need to rethink this as it doesn't put the money in the customers hand (albeit via a prop) until after they walkaway.
- Make contestants fully aware of what they have already won - At times I don't think Jeremy highlighted enough what they have already won and the potential drop. I know this information is on the contestants screens but sometimes I don't think it was highlighted enough causing the spate of losers we saw.
- Let contestants set both safety nets - Could be an interesting prospect. Might also prevent the spate of £1000 losers like we saw and could cause more tense moments if they could potentially lose everything.
And what should be kept the same:
- Keep the stripped scheduling - Old Millionaire suffered a lot when it was broadcast weekly. The stripped scheduling works well so the contestants are fresh in the views mind.
- Keep the set - The set is easily the best thing about this new series. Just a shame the rest of the graphics and the titles don't quite keep up with the impressive set.
- Keep Jeremy - Unbelievably I didn't mind Jeremy as much as I thought I would. At times I didn't even miss Chris Tarrant and liked Jeremy's dry wit. He was a good choice.

It was a gradual stripping back though wasn't it? Between it being on every night and once a week, I think it was on two or three times a week.

How would that work? They could set two safety nets consecutively?

I think it was Monday, Thursday, Saturday by 2000. I'm pretty sure Judith Keppel's show started on the Saturday and continued Monday.

Definitely should come back in the stripped format, but not too soon or too often. Another run in the autumn would be fine. I wouldn't change anything format wise and I can't say that the use of fonts particularly bothered me.

I think the Ask The Host lifeline should remain. The dynamic of the contestant being able to discuss the answers with Jeremy was a really good one I though. Jeremy is very much the voice of the viewer at home, and Ask The Host was almost a way of replicating conversations viewers were having at home over the question.

Just have the freedom to set two safety nets when they want during the game. They could then have more (or less) than £1,000 to fall back on if they lose. They could of course lose everything if they were being cocky and hadn't set their first safety net.

That's right - it was stripped every night for the first two years, and then when it came back in September 2000 I seem to recall it was stripped for the first few days but then just never stopped and ran a couple of times a week. Although Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays were the usual days, I remember it was also shown on various other days too, and for a while it was used as a spoiler against pretty much every new programme on BBC1, they would almost always wheel it out opposite a new drama or entertainment show.
I remember in March 2001, on the night Phil got shot in 'stEnders, the Beeb showed The Weakest Link before it, and there was much ballyhoo in the papers because that got higher ratings than the episode of Millionaire that night (although Millionaire was up against half of 'stEnders) and everyone started saying The Weaskest Link was now the big show. I think by 2002 it had gone down to just once a week, plus various "specials".

Another notable time they did this was when Judith Keppel became the first person to win a million pounds, and ITV decided to put it up against the last episode of One Foot in the Grave. ISTR Richard Wilson and David Renwick, among others, claiming that Celador and ITV had engineered the win to take viewers away from OFITG.
