Like I said, if it was a format change to boost flagging ratings then a new lifeline might be an idea

A temporary change for probably one series, it’s best to keep it as simple as possible

Surprised they didn't go the 'Ask the Expert' route - https://millionaire.fandom.com/wiki/Ask_the_Expert

If the series had been live, they could of equally been innovative and done something like 'Ask the Audience...at Home' and get viewers to vote live through an app on the right answer. Could have been interesting!

The point Billy is making is that if used with conjunction with 50:50 it effectively means they can get an automatically pass on a question. Imagine how much of an anti-climax that would be on a Million Pound question?
Yeah, suppose someone gets to £500,000 with only Ask The Host and Phone a Friend used? They could go 50/50, and then use Double Dip to give two answers. There's only two answers left to pick from, so you're guaranteed to get it right and win the million. Definitely anti-climatic.

but at the same time, if someone's able to get to that point in the game in that situation, their gameplan worked and they deserve the million, imho. it may not make for good tv, but they would definately deserve it

They don’t just give a million pounds to people who deserve it though so that’s not really even an argument. It wouldn’t feel like a real win.

How many Phone a Friend 'friend's does each contestant have? I think it may be 3 but back in the heyday I think it was around 10?

Of course during the height of Lockdown then even Phone A Friend wouldn't have been possible given a Production Assistant has to be in every home to monitor the 'friend'.

One curiosity is whether they can select the same friend twice or if it has to be different people both times.

I believe it’s 2 friends on the current version and was about 6 originally.

Double Dip means you can pick two answers (one of which may be right), but if you pick two wrong answers, you have to answer the question (no walk away allowed) and if you get it wrong, you go back to last safety net, or progress.

Nope, I've tried, but I still don't get it.

Some sad news coming in from the US. Regis Philbin has died at the age of 88.

The word legend gets banded about to often these days, but Regis was definitely a legend. He basically saved ABC with Millionaire. He said himself in numerous interviews that Millionaire was the best thing that he's done on TV.

Regis made Millionaire and Millionaire made Regis. The UK had Bruce Forsyth, the US had Regis Philbin.

He'll be sorely missed.

The first time I'd heard of Regis Philbin was in a Goodfeathers short of The Animaniacs. Can't remember the exact plot but the Martin Scorsese statue the "goodfeathers" usually flocked around ended up being replaced with one of Regis Philbin. I had no idea who that was until seeing the US version of Millionaire.

Factoid of the day.

Sad news - didn't realise he was so old to be honest - thought he was about 20 years younger than that.

He last took on his Millionaire role in the sitcom as Fresh off the Boat.

He was playing himself from almost 20 years before.

He also featured on the ABC Behind the Scenes documentary visiting the new set earlier this year. He did seem quite frail on that.
