Tuesday was Let's Pretend [and later on Rod Jane and Freddie].
I notice S4C had much less foreign on then than it does now -- I don't know what campaigners whinge about. Mind you it was only the other year it still shut down at 1am, which was a bit pathetic.
I thought Rainbow was shown on Tuesdays as wel. For some reason I thought that Rainbow was shown twice weekly. Let's Pretend only lasted the early 80's and Rod Jane and Freddie although I can't remember it at lunchtime but I do remember it being on CITV in the afternoon.
I think Rainbow was on a Tuesday in the 80s
Monday - Lets Pretend
Tuesday - Rainbow
Wednesday - Allsorts
Thursday - Puddle Lane
Friday - Rainbow
Then around 1988/9 schedule changed and we had
Monday - Playbox
Tues - Rod Jane and Freddy
Wed - Allsorts
Thurs - The Riddlers
Fri - Rainbow
And then of course in 1993 we had Tots TV, Wizadora etc

Well for Prime Time I would say it can go back some time now, definately before the 1990's, but even after that there were some variations.
Though for daytime that is far more recent, for mornings they have been the same for god knows how long, but afternoon it has always varied, some regions show their own programmes, some show films, repeats etc. I think since the demise of the full lunchtime edition of London Today back in 2002, I think that has lead to ITV having a national schedule, regions showed their own things whilst London had News at 1pm, but since then all of the regions had the same schedule. (When I mean all I mean ex Carlton and Granada regions)

When was it that ITV forced all of the regions to use the same schedule?

I miss hour-long regional news. I remember that every Tuesday and Friday, Meridian Tonight lasted an hour from 6pm to 7pm, with an extended montage of clips and music at the end of each edition. I can also remember visiting Devon and being impressed by the fact that they had an hour-long Westcountry Lunchtime Live every day. Oh, happy days, as Harry Hill would say...

I was shocked to recently realise that Let's Pretend was still running as late as 1988... not sure if these were repeats of previous series or all-new episodes.
IIRC the ITN News moved from 1pm to 12.30pm in September 1988 with the new ITV daytime schedule that saw the start of "This Morning", then in September 1989 it shifted back to 1pm, then by September 1991 at the latest, the afternoon bulletin was back in the 12.30pm slot where it remains today.
