It's almost as if they created titles for use on a weekly basis... #ifonly
Funny, I had the complete opposite reaction, that to use the 1970s logo (that was always a byword for old TOTP even when it was still a going concern) surely means any chance of it being revived as a regular show has gone.
Yeah, nice to create something unique after so many years rather than the odd hybrid we’ve had.
Shame it was shunted to the morning, and even had the indignation of not even being introduced during the ident (unlike pretty much the rest of the programmes on yesterday)
Being shunted to the morning is pretty much a sign there's next to no chance of the weekly show coming back, and possibly not even much of a future for the Christmas edition. Still good they made the effort though!

I think they more likely to axe the new year speacial before the Christmas one.
Have to wonder what the target audience is though because the traditional target audience of TOTP were not even born when TOTP was axed.
It's not a complicated format for the young audience to get their heads around. There are famous artists they've heard of perfoming the songs they know. The fact it's called Top of the Pops and that it used to be a weekly show is neither hear nor there, really.

I think the future of the Christmas show is probably as secure as it's ever been, it won its slot quite comfortably and they presumably get a benefit out of it in terms of credibility and being able to use clips from it on social media and the like. Later with Jools doesn't get much in terms of viewers on a weekly basis, but it continues because they're the right kind of viewers.
The Twitter impressions for the Christmas specials, as well as the BBC Four repeats run, are as important, if not more so, than the ratings.
Granted, it's the more loyal viewers who tend to boost the trends, but they're the ones who've helped keep the TOTP name alive, which given the past decade, is a worthy feat.
Also, it's certainly getting to a point where you start to wonder if some of the performers on the Christmas/New Year specials may even remember when TOTP was a weekly series...
The intro into the Christmas number one was about as lowkey as the charts are in general these days.
Just thrown in right at the end with a generic intro, rather than a pre-recorded intro where they’d do various versions to name the actual number one.
I’m surprised they still have Fearne Cotton hosting it, I’m guessing probably one of the longest running hosts ever? Surprised they don’t use one of the current Radio 1 faces alongside Clara Amfo.

When was the show filmed? The song may have released after filming.
Elstree; four recording sessions over Sunday 8th and Monday 9th December.
Why they no longer record multiple links announcing the actual Christmas Number 1: there's no Word of God answer to that, but I imagine apathy has a part to play.
Or perhaps the production team/channel head is content to get the show in the can as early as possible, without having to make a final tweak days (or in a few cases in the past hours) before broadcast.
Or maybe they know only a minority of us viewers care about such minutiae
