Sunday Morning News on BBC1

Is Breakfast with Frost necessary anymore? (September 2003)

I was watching BBC1 on Sunday morning while eating my breakfast, Breakfast finished at 9:00 and then Breakfast with Frost followed it immediately after. It had exactly the same news stories (in fact, many of the stories that Moira read were worded in exactly the same way as they were read an hour before on Breakfast), the same paper review, even the same interviews. It got me thinking - do we really need both programmes?

I prefer the style of Breakfast, so think Breakfast with Frost is unnecessary and should be axed. It looks tired and dated anyway.

Perhaps it could be turned into a Sunday-Morning Talk Show™, the American tradition of having politics shows on Sunday mornings. They've been around since the 50s.

Not that I want to see UK television Americanised, but it seems like it's a good fit. Just a thought.

I think Breakfast with Frost is MAGNIFICENT - just the type of programme you need on a Sunday morning as the working week lies ahead. It must not be axed, its one of the few remaining old style politcal programmes at the BBC.

If anything needs to be axed - get rid of Breakfast from the studios of BBC News 24, and the crap presenters like Botfield that it brings with it.

I hate the way "Breakfast" now takes up three hours on a Sunday morning. It's dreadfully done as it's just a shody News 24 show with different titles.

Weekend 24 going on until 10 on Saturday is just a disgrace, urgh.

Plus the way that Breakfast with Frost (along with GMTV's The Sunday Programme) generally sets the news agenda for the rest of the day, so they can't really get rid of it

Err - but surely the fact that "Frost" gets some of the best interviews and guests of the week justifies its existence.

"Frost" interviews, along with those from the "Politics Show" and the Sky, ITV and GMTV Sunday morning interview shows set the political agenda for the early part of the week, and "Frost" is still more dominant than some of the others. Surely the difference in style is part of this, and a change of pace and style at the weekend is a welcome change, and preferable to "more of the same" Breakfast-style coverage?

I think the future of the thing will be decided when David Frost retires. He must be pushing reitrement age now anyway. I suppose they would, as you say just leave the regular Breakfast service on its own, or change the format and bring in a younger presenter (they probably wouldnt give it to Frosts main stand in Peter Sissons, as he aint all that much younger than Frost). But I reckon with the BBC getting Match of the Day back, and having to do the Sunday morning repeat, they will probably slice off the last hour or so of Breakfast to show MOTD, with Breakfast going till about 7.45/8 and then Breakfast with Frost or whatever at 9. I reckon they should do the thing from the regular Breakfast weekday set, rather than have some special set up as now.

I'd say more dominant than all of the others by a very big margin.

It is rare to pick up a Monday newspaper and not find "told the BBC's Breakfast with Frost" written in there at least once.

It roughly works to Frost - GMTV Sunday - Sky Sunday - and then ITV's JD and BBC One's Politics Show pick up what's left.

It'd be suicidal to scrap Breakfast with Frost, or at least its format and purpose. The best TV interviews of the week can be found on there. Frost certainly looks to be creeping up to retirement, but I think the argument that "once David Frost goes, we should destroy the backbone of the BBC's political coverage" is a pretty weak one, frankly.

They should call it Breakfast with Sissons.

You're not far wrong Altowers - Frost's been away well over two months now surely? Does he usually have this long a holiday, or is this him in "semi-retirement"?

I say leave the programme as is. We need to keep political discussion shows - the tabloid-style Breakfast would hardly make up for the abscence of Frost. Maybe Frost's departure will see an update of the opening titles and theme music, they seem very outdated now!

Yes, he does lol - he goes over the summer break - last year Huw Edwards, Sue McGregor, Peter Sissons, Fergal Keane and a few others stood in.

lol well if Frost is still the main presenter on the programme then I do think that it should be renamed, whether it's just in the summer and it's called ''Breakfast Extra'' or something or indeed renamed something appropriate for any presenter like ''Breakfast Extra'' (naff I know) it just isn't right to make Peter Sissons say ''Welcome to Breakfast with Frost without Frost''.
