What I don't understand, is presumably they still have to pay for these dropped programmes, so why don't they play them after 10.30?

The reason they are dropping the programmes, is so they don't have to pay for them, replacing them with cheaper 'alternatives'. STV will only pay for the programmes if they show them - hence the reason why they are not.

I'm prepared to bet a fair whack that the reason Al Murray and Piers have been dropped has little to do with the pricetag.

this is quite a brave and lonely furrow stv are ploughing.
its absolutely clear to me that now itv plc are struggling, the shareholders at stv would be less than impressed if the top table in glasgow sat back and kept their fingers crossed that itv plc were going to put out the right kind of programming at the right price.
it seems logical that a company would think long and hard about every product it purchased from its supplier.
that said, there is one thing that intrigues me ... why aren't channel tv and utv following suit? obviously there's an element of not biting the hand that feeds you, but there must be other factors.
