What is the BBC HD 3D coverage like this evening? Is it only the dances themselves that are in 3D? I'm guessing the judges and Tess Daly's bits are in regular HD.

I've not got 3D but reading around other places it seems there are lots of longer shots so that the chandeliers look to be much closer to get the perspective and full 3D effect. A lot less close ups apparently.

I'm not sure they can switch between 3D and HD mid programme can they? Wouldn't that involve people putting on and taking off their specs too? Or do they just replay the same image to left and right so that perceived depth becomes nil during non-3D sequences ...

Judging from the tweets of people who were watching the 3D transmission, the effect was very good indeed...

They can stuff 2D HD feeds into a box to (an extent) produce a simulated 3D image. I was watching in 3D last night, it was fairly obvious when the image was simulated 3D and when it was native.

eugh - surely that's going to look ropey ... I don't know much about 3D to be perfectly honest and have only watched a tiny bit of rugby via Sky. The effect on high wide shots was virtually nil, but the pitch-side stuff was terrific. I imagine the same was true of last night, though I noticed the director included chandeliers and so-on in the foreground of the high shots so presumably that was to help the effect. Makes you wonder if they could do the Last Night of the Proms in 3D ... though quite what the point would be I'm not sure. This is the problem I have with 3D as a concept - there are only a few programmme genres where it really adds anything IMO. Dancing and Sport you can see the attraction, but for a documentary ... a quiz show ... a soap ? Maybe we need a new thread for 3D discussion?

You were watching on BBC One with the BBC One director, presumably BBC HD 3D had their own director taking different shots, shots that would work better in 3D.

I wonder if all cameras covering the dance floor were 3D cameras and either director could take the shots or if there was HD and 3D cameras and the whole 3D operation was completely separate to the HD coverage.

I'd like to see both versions side by side.

One of my colleagues was helping NEP Visions with the 3D set up, I'll see him on Wednesday, so I'll find out what the arrangement was.

I wonder if there's a chance for Arlene to return, now that Alesha Dixon has quit? Can't think of any other female judge in this line.

I imagine she is very busy with her other commitments. Not to mention the fact that by 2029 she will be 86 - older then Sir Bruce Forsyth is now.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Wayne Sleep appearing, as of 1976 he is only 28 years old.

Quite a number of people are suggesting Karen Hardy as replacement. After all,she is a trained dancer. I think avoid any backlash from critcs, newspapers, and most importantly, the viewers, the new judge should definitely be a trained dancer. She provides good analysis of the dances on It Takes Two. I think she would be very suitable for the role.

Alesha, on the other hand, might have given her career the kiss of death. BGT was on its way down last year, who's knows about this year? Moving to ITV is rarely a good career move, judging by the last few BBC faces to move on. Plus the rotation of judges on these Cowell shows is less than consistent from year to year. I wish her well, but I can't see her having the success that perhaps she is looking for through this programme.
