Kinda like this right?

Bloke in suit... Nope.
Graphic inset... Nope.
Backdrop of somewhere vaguely outside a studio... Yep

So - apart from the desk not at all the same... (And to be fair most of the BBC's presentation when events are taking place isn't from that studio)

My point was that the Bob Costas presentation could have been coming from a studio in New York. It was so 80s/90s Newsy, so generic and so lacking any sense of place. We really do have totally different ways of doing TV to the US industry.

It probably isn't all that fair to compare NRK's studio with the BBC. For Norway, the Winter Olympics is a massive deal. It's only of interest to some in the UK. However, spot on with the US comparison. The look NBC has adopted is much the same as it had 10 years ago. That was the style then but even Americans have moved on. The TV set designers there are slowly recognising this. A few of the regional sets are becoming more European. Does anyone have screen grabs from other broadcasters? There's been a surprising lack of pics from this Games. I'm quite keen to see what the other Scandinavian countries are doing.

NRK? I think you mean TV2 don't you? NRK have lost the rights to the Winter Olympics when the EBU deal stopped... (The irony is that TV2 have subbed NRK Produksjon to host broadcast event coverage for them...)

SVT also lost the rights for the same reason.

Which is just a back up for the BBC and at least has a real view of the Olympic Park.

The view is decent, but I guess it was never going to live up to the London one, I would have been surprised if it did, the NBC effort is definitely very poor though it looks really bad on screen it looks very wrong, the BBCs looks sensible in comparison despite the rather oddly shaped desk design.

But hey - NBC have their own branch of Starbucks and 2500 staff out there...

Hazel Irvine has been released from her little shoebox this morning to present from the curling arena for the bronze medal match. Hopefully she'll be presenting the men's final tomorrow afternoon - with respect to Jonathan Edwards, Hazel knows what she's talking about.

Slightly surprised that, after Lizzy Yarnold's skeleton final was moved to BBC One last Friday, they haven't done the same for the curling final. Still scheduled for 1.30pm on BBC Two.

Timing I suspect, final not during or approaching 'primetime'.

Also, it would've pre-empted the local news.

Yeah that's what I had anticipated. Echoes of the 2002 women's final, when coverage started at 9.50pm (9pm in Scotland) on BBC Two and switched to BBC One at 10.35pm.

Interesting - shows how a small set doesn't have to be dull and cheap.

I guess each country creates and designs sets that are appropriate for their their markets. Some like warm and cozy. Some like it busy. some spare and empty. Guess it depends on their viewers. But also the money they have to create them and the imagination and modern technology.

Well at least Fuji TV goes for a design which matches the look of the games. As awful as the BBC design is though it's only a positive thing that their Olympic coverage is becoming less and less studio based.
