Yep, even at the end of the final edition they were talking as if they'd be back soon.

Getting Dave Berry as presenter makes me think they were going to go disregard the 2005 revamp as well, as he was the most common guest host during 2004 and pre-revamp 2005. It's hard to think of much positive to say about the 2005 revamp, really.

Yes, the plan always was that they were going to sell CDUK to Channel Five, hence as you say in the last episode they made great play of saying "the last CDUK for a while", but then the sponsor pulled out, C5 couldn't find a new one and without one it wasn't viable, so it never happened. That was the same reason there wasn't a similar replacement on ITV, which I know was initially the plan, but they couldn't afford to do it without a sponsor.

As you say, the last year of CDUK wasn't very good. Lauren Laverne is a great presenter (reminds me of when she did Planet Pop on T4 which was axed and replaced by Popworld, much to my dismay as you went from her being all arch to two nobodies on a Simon Fuller-backed show, only for me to completely forget about Planet Pop five minutes later) but she didn't seem to work with Myleene Klass and Johnny Pitts (who is now a very successful director, of course) and there was probably too much talking. I know there were three hosts before, but with Ant and Dec it really was two for the price of one.

You can argue that the made-up chart they used for the last year was a sensible decision because it meant they could play what the audience wanted to hear without having to cover the other stuff in the chart the kids weren't interested in, and as long as they were playing their favourites the kids couldn't care less how the chart was compiled. But the fact they didn't have the "real" chart meant it seemed a bit less essential.

No surprise they skipped the final years of the show and probably the right call, though a bit more input from Cat on her input would have been nice.

Yeah, I didn't especially want them to cover the post-Ant and Dec era, it wasn't very good at all and would have been a right buzzkill. It was like when It Started With Swap Shop ended in the mid-nineties, which meant they didn't have to cover the years when the Beeb were being thrashed by SMTV.

I really enjoy Ant and Dec in these programmes, I love it when they get the chance to chat and tell stories, they're so funny. It's a bit of a shame that they do such big shows these days with limited opportunities to go off-script and just kick back and ad-lib.

A shame they couldn't have tried to bring back The Chart Show, that would probably have been cheap enough for them to be able to make even without a sponsor seeing as you don't need a studio, presenters, acts being booked etc. Though whether they'd have wanted to do that with music channels widely available, and a studio show was at least offering something you couldn't get on there.

I think Channel 4 were running B4 during weekday mornings at that point, which was made by The Chart Show people, so The Chart Show would probably have been out of ITV's reach at that point anyway.

One of the bizarre things about the CDUK revamp of 2005 is they were clearly going all in with a female audience - look how pink the titles and set was. I never understand why you'd intentionally scare away some viewers, in this case men in your style or format. Maybe ITV said if you get even more of the female demographic we could get better advertising and keep the show? That's just me going out on a leg though.

I thought it was great. Some things I liked, in no particular order...!

Acknowledgment the show didn’t initially work
All 4:3 clips (nice decision)
Interviews with Nigel Pickard and David Liddiment
Revisiting TLS
The various stings (and using old clips to throw to the break)

It didn’t bother me in the slightest the final years and CD:UK weren’t covered.

Even if they did talk about CD:UK what is they really to talk about they wasn't any sketches in that it was all music artists performing

Did anyone ever explain the significance of the characters that appeared in the opening titles, astons and the set in the early days? They were so prominently featured and yet I don't recall ever hearing their names.

I know they were created by the artist behind Gorillaz (who is often rumoured to be Banksey) and that's about it.

I found this YouTube with no monetised ads every five minutes!

I enjoyed watching it all. I liked the idea of using the different theme tunes going in and out of the breaks. I think that’s the first time I’ve ever heard Stephen Mulhern say he failed with MOM. Something I noticed at the start was the join with certain words coming in and out from old clips as they walk in to studio.

The characters were created by Jamie Hewlett. In the pilot episode, they named some of the characters - but these all didn't appear in the titles and also it was never mentioned when the show actually went live. There was SM:TV Clive (the guy with the cap that kicked the homework into the bin), Charlie D Cat (red head that climbs out of the tea and jumps onto the butter knife), Kazza the Chameleon (that splats on the book in the titles), Micky Martian, and Beaver Boy. They introduced them essentially to say that they weren't the only animals and to then introduce Cat Deeley.
paul_hadley and mediaman2007 gave kudos

I never gave them much thought beyond being really cool characters used in the opening titles and on the set? They gave the show that "cool" look it was going for at the beginning but worked very well all the way through I thought. I never knew Jamie Hewlett was rumoured to be Banksy!!

Just watched the show again at 8pm with family. Felt even more nostalgic and sad that it's not on again next week.

A shame they never named the skunk!

I remember in the titles them pushing the Sainsway's supermarket bags out of the way to watch the TV.
