Back in the 70's I think...

Two elderly "classic professor types" in an oxbridge university setting.
I can't remember if they were solving crimes or local issues but they were
beautifully written and very very funny.

I wish I could think of the name and ask someone to repeat them ...

Not "Chalders and Caldicott" by the way - though that name rang a bell for me and I think
the name was similar. One of the actors was a classic English stage actor probably in his 70s at the time, very tall and 'erect'.

I can only think of Never the Twain.

(By the way, I see this thread has been invaded by a daybreak.)

It certainly wasn't Never the Twain...but I can't for the life of me think what it was.

Is it "The Mind of Mr J G Reeder"?

I think the Mind of Mr J G Reeder ticks the boxes. It was made between 1969 and 1971 by Thames Television. The 1969 series was in black-and-white and the 1971 series, because of the ITV "colour strike" might be similar, or may have a fair number of monochrome episodes. They are available, I think, on DVD. If the bulk of the programmes are not in colour I can't see them being rerun on, for example, ITV 3 where they have never, to my knowledge, screened the black-and-white episodes of Upstairs, Downstairs, despite regularly re-running the show. Although I did see a monochrome Bless This House on some channel fairly recently.

Is it "The Mind of Mr J G Reeder"?

Nope Embarassed Thanks for the suggestion though Derek !

It was one of those very English, static, series set almost exclusively indoors, like plays, full of wonderful dry quips and dialogue. All set in what I recall was an Oxbridge university setting. The main character was an elderly very erect Etonian type but I distinctively remember it was based around a duo, though I can't recall the second character at all.

I appreciate all the help - I really hope someone recalls it.
