BBC sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf is poised to return for a one-off special after a 10-year absence.

Robert Llewellyn, who played android Kryten in the show, told Canadian TV that BBC Worldwide has commissioned a new 60 minute episode to be filmed in October for DVD release next year.

The series set on a spaceship made stars of Llewellyn, Craig Charles and Chris Barrie.

And for those who see Teletext as reliable as The Sun, teasing comments on the official website: Red Dwarf gets Anniversarial

So 10 years later, and we're finally going to see what happened to Rimmer being left on his own, after kicking Death between the legs, and Red Dwarf about to blow up... about smegging time really!

Llewellyn also on an american radio station said that, as far as he was aware, this special was going to be used as a way to open up a possible new series. Very Happy

Good stuff - particularly if it's back to the quality of the earlier series and not the later ones which weren't as good.

Great news, but there appears to be some confusion as to the format of the new Dwarf.

Robert has said it's a one hour special, which is a door opener for another series. However other news sources like 'The Sun' are saying it's going to be 4x 30 minute 'Two Ronnies Sketchbook' type retrospective shows on Dave. With new material added to bridge the gaps between clips.

I'm not inclined to believe 'The Sun' but the details they've given are very specific. Robert doesn't seem that sure himself of what is going on. I hope his idea of the one hour special is right.

It sounds like it could be a special episode along the lines of the 'Allo 'Allo special earlier in the year (or was it last Christmas?).

Anyone who has purchased the Red Dwarf DVD's or know the amount of effort GNP put into the production, will sleep safely knowing this will be an entirely new 60min episode... not some cheap flashback product.

If the whole point of this is to reawaken interest, they'll go all guns blazing. Higher production value, better scripts, and so on...

And personally I feel both Robert and The Sun could both be right... UKTV have always been known for their "weekend" for anniversaries, so 'new material' will be interviews with perhaps one or two new sketches [seeing the set will be available] and then a new hour long special later on.

Personally, I think it's about time we got a Dwarf Christmas Special. Always thought that time slot on BBC Two could do with some Dwarf after Who and Creek!

Oh and in regards to quality of earlier and latter series, yes the eariler format was true Red Dwarf... but things needs to evolve. And although I admit series VII wasn't all that amazing [barring 'Stoke Me A Clipper'], Series VIII was the perfect combination of classic writing and modern values.

It'd be great if they got some of the Doctor Who effects team from the Mill to work on this. They'd make the ship look fantastic.

I would expect a fair bit of grovelling to Coronation Street's producers from Craig Charles to allow him to appear in this. Normally Corrie contracts don't allow actors to appear in anything else.

There have been exceptions such as Sue Nicholls who was given leave to revive her role as Joan in The Legacy Of Reginald Perrin... But Craig Charles hasn't exactly earned himself many favours with Corrie bosses during his time on the show.

As much as he''ll enjoy the regular work on Corrie, I expect he would jump ship in a heartbeat at the chance to reprise RD as a new series.

If true look out for Patrick Stewart as a potential guest star - its one of his favourite shows, he says.

If it is true re: the special...Then this is fantastic news!! Very Happy

I hope the cliffhanger of sorts from the end of VIII is finally resolved; but I suppose in any case, it'll just be great to see the Dwarf back on telly - it's been a long time coming.
