New Blue Peter Theme For The New Series

Supposedly "modern" - apparently (August 2004)

Found this by accident linked from somewhere else on bbc.co.uk. Should be in the right forum.

Blue Peter have changed their theme tune (and their entire look/presentation by the sounds of it) for the new series starting in a fortnight or so on CBBC. And it sucks. It's still the same familiar tune, it just sounds like it's been played in a wind tunnel. Posters on the BBC's Blue Peter don't seem too impressed either. One poster wrote "the new theme tune sounds like it has come from a totally different planet."

Listen for yourself: http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/bluepeter and click on "IT'S EXCLUSIVE... Listen to the new Blue Peter theme tune!".

eeeek sounds a bit ropey to me, like something from the 70's....

Sounds more modern than the more recent orchestrated version but somehow it's just wrong: 6/10.

It's not too bad, it sounds like it's going back to the older theme they used in the 1980's, though I still think it doesn't beat the current theme, that is modern enough IMO.

Haha! That sounds like something they would've had back in the 70s!

I really like it - quite funky but maintains the original tune much better than the current version!

The theme tune they've been using for the last few years sounds like it's from the 1950's., it was a definate backward step. The new one sounds good

Quite like it myself - but I'm usually in the minority in liking updated themes - although the opening note should be cut off. Hope they keep the updated ship logo - looks far more modern than the traditional one alone!

I guess for the first time in about 4 years (when I was young you had a new presenter every year - it was a national event!) they'll have at least one new presenter this year as Liz is on maternity leave and apparantly the show is going 5 nights a week on CBBC - although they may just bring in extra presenters exclusively for the extra CBBC channel shows.

And quite ironic that the most successful ex-BP presenter of recent years is it's most controversial!

I LIKE it! It's actually longer than the previous version, which they've used since 1999, and it feels like a great mix between old and new. Much more recognisable than that dustbin lid version they used in the mid-late 1990s (the one I grew up with).

Thats NICE! As someone who's dad owns the Mike Oldfield 70s version, I'd say its a remix of the guitar part - the second movement. I really like it.

I think that's really cool!! It's VERY representative of Mike Oldfield's working of the theme tune, which I have on CD (as part of 'The Complete Mike Oldfield' 2CD album) and on 7" vinyl. It actually SOUNDS like the theme tune, which is more than can be said of that AWFUL percussionist 'Tap Dogs' version a couple of themes ago.....

The ship's whistle at the very start is very appropriate since in shipping, there is in fact a Blue Peter flag (a small white oblong within a larger navy blue oblong), raised 24 hours before a ship leaves port - it's great they've retained that particular naval connection with it... then we get a quick build-up to the main body of the theme..... oh for a full-on hard dance/trance version next!

Although if I was them I'd ditch the old ship from the new ship (if you see what I mean) - using both doesn't look good

The current 4 seem to have been there forever. The lovely Konnie is now not far off being thelongest serving Blue Peter presenter. Quite a scary thought

Is that Anthea Turner or John Leslie?

Not really - and compared with the 1970s stalwarts of Blue Peter, she's not really been there that long. I believe Konne joined Blue Peter in 1998 making her tenure on BP about 6 and a half years, about the same length of time that Diane-Louise Jordan was with the show. Presenters in the 1960s and 1970s had very long presenterships with the show:

John Noakes: 30th December 1965 - 26th June 1978 (nearly 12 and a half years)
Valerie Singleton: 3rd September 1962 - 3rd July 1972 (9 years 10 months)
Peter Purves: 16th November 1967- 23rd March 1978 (9 years 4 months)
Simon Groom: 15th May 1978 to 23rd June 1986 (8 years 1 month)

So, another six years on the show and Konnie will be nearly there!
