New BBC One North

But what is North? Manchester or Hull, Newcastle or Cumbria? (March 2021)

Pretty sure what they mean by that is we will cut the number of sub-regions in the North to enable us to deliver regional news in HD but rather than be honest about that we'll try and pass it off as a new and improved version of BBC1 and hope nobody notices.

It looks like the return of the old BBC North region which covered the current three regions. Lincs will be the loser in this if the Hull based regional news bulletin is replaced with a bulletin from Salford, but I like the idea of tailored continuity for the north in the same way the nations have.

No mention of Lincolnshire. Does that mean Hull isn't involved in this (that region is called Yorkshire and Lincolnshire), only Manchester (North West), Leeds (Yorkshire) and Newcastle (North East)?

I hope that's not the case. I'm not sure they'd get away with replacing two (or three) Look Norths and North West Tonight with just one super-region programme, if that's what you're inferring.

It sounds to me more like there'll be more pan-North regional opt-outs, a bit like the Superleague Show (if that's still a thing), or the recent Powering Britain programmes with Keeley Donovan... and maybe some, like the latter, will also get off-peak network showings.

"The BBC’s regional and Nations TV news service at 6.30pm is the UK’s most-watched news programme.
It matters now more than ever before. To support this critical output:
• We will aim to launch BBC One HD services across all English regions by the end of 2022 to enhance the viewing experience for millions of viewers"

Finally. Hopefully they'll cough up for the Freeview changes ITV has wanted to implement.

It also says they'll reduce their property estate in London. Perhaps that means the non- TVC White City buildings or maybe the separate buildings around NBH. Do they still have other buildings in London (other than Maida Vale/Stratford)? Elstree I suppose.

No, not one super-region but the Yorkshire sub-regions may be simplified. We'll see though - might just me being cynical. Assume there is no mention of the SD versions being closed.

Regional continuity is the big thing there.

So, RedBee Salford produce BBC One North which has opt outs for the Look Norths and NWT?

This sounds like they’re planning to move out of The Mailbox.
Quote:
We will build Birmingham’s strength in TV formats, with more primetime brands alongside Great British Menu. We aim to build a centre of excellence in production in Birmingham by consolidating all BBC activity there into one creative quarter, such as Digbeth.

I'm really not surprised; the Mailbox costs a fortune in rent and the lease expires in 2026.

That's what I'm coming to the conclusion that this new BBC One North will have four sub-regions sharing continuity, but maintains regional news bulletins.

Yorkshire/N Mids
Yorks and Lincs
North West
NE and Cumbria
