To look at TV as it was in the 1970s would amaze modern viewers - no breakfast "service" (until 1983, patchy until then), limited broadcasting hours, broadcasting for hours on end happened only if something significant was happening (often elections), schools programming on the main commercial network most weekday mornings, all morning and of course, only three channels, all of which weren't airing anything mainstream during the day. Incredible to think that was how it was used to be in this world of two million channels on air 24/7.


Odd to think that as late as 1983, the first television news of the day was at 1:00pm.

Are Sky Sports the only examples of programmes with the sponsor's name in the title? Gillette Soccer Saturday and Ford Monday Night Football etc (Other than events like awards ceremonies and sports tournaments where it's the event rather than the coverage that is being sponsored)

Is "Daily Brunch With Ocado" what you're thinking of? Long forgotten, unless you search for Ocado on Twitter and Tim Lovejoy is the first suggestion that appears, even above @Ocado... god knows that algorithm works.

What's Cooking which was a shortlived daily show with Ben Shephard and Lisa Faulkner on Channel 4 which was co funded by Sainsbury's.

Not an example of a sponsor being integrated with the titles, but an example of the Granada ident being integrated instead, which I've not seen before:

Any ideas how this would have been seen in other regions? The whole ident without the Granada continuity? Although that would be a bit long for a front cap and weren't front caps gone by then anyway?


I suspect other regions would have just seen the blue water effect.

I got to admit it’s pretty clever it’s all in sync as well, or was it a one off for the 5 year celebration so it was hard baked onto the titles?

There was also 'Orange Playlist' on ITV and 'Transmission with T-Mobile' on Channel 4 in the mid-2000s.

Here’s a slight departure, but talking of sponsorship influencing programme content, check this one out from a Channel 4 cricket highlights programme from 2001. The coverage at the time was sponsored by Stepstone Recruitment (they did the sponsorship for all of C4’s sport in 2000 and 2001) who had the strap line ‘your career, your life, your future’.

Head to 2:45 in this video and see this be rather blatantly referenced in the opening montage - I thought that kind of thing was prohibited?!

Of course, for a while Becks sponsored all drama on C4 but pulled out when they decided Queer as Folk was a bit too rude for them. But it was interesting that in that instance Becks got all the bad PR for coming across as narrow-minded rather than C4.


You've just reminded me of the reason the ITC made changes to sponsorship rules in the mid 90s: Heineken's disgraceful attempt to interfere in the production of ITV show Hotel Babylon, which they sponsored in 1996.

Having seen a pilot episode, Heineken faxed producers Planet 24 some notes objecting to a number of things, including the amount of male audience members drinking wine, and stated "more evidence of beer is not just requested but needed". They also complained that host Dani Behr "shouldn't stand in the way of the beer columns when introducing guests," and ordered that the whole show be more "Heineken-ized". But most shocking of all was Heineken's insistence that there was "too high a proportion of negroes in the audience."

Planet 24 promptly told them where to go, and leaked the fax to the media. The furore that followed prompted the ITC's review into programme sponsorship.

I think I also spotted him in the intro at 0.37 although could be wrong.
