Sex and the City, Friends and Frasier - all American, all with high profile endings, but thinking about it, there hasn't really been high profile final episodes of UK shows here over the last few years.

The biggest would be the original final episode of Only Fools and Horses, while thinking about it, the end of One Foot in the Grave had the nation speculating, although in both, we knew what was going to happen.

For UK comedy and drama, there aren't that many high profile endings I can think off, with the emphasis in UK television on final episodes of entertainment shows such as The Big Breakfast and the annual final of Big Brother.

So anyone wanting to reminise about the end of their favourite shows, or say how they think a current programme should end, speak now.

Crossroads ended in a supermarket with some nice lines. Pity about the rest of the Mark III series really but the ending matched it I suppose Razz

Anybody who missed those supermarket scenes at the end of Crossroads Mark III can download them from my site (The Show --> Downloads --> Multimedia Section --> Video Shelf).

Of course the 2003 ending to Crossroads wasn't very high profile. The 1988 ending was, with all the newspaper adverts for it, bilboards and such. And a huge 75 minute episode on the easter Monday that got about 13 million viewers.

The original went with a huge bang, 2003 went with a little burp. 2002's Crossroads went with a sqeek. Shocked

Mike, I'm loathe to drag this thread off topic and down the Xroads route, suffice to say that this discussion is very welcome @ Planet or other sites including your own.

I'm just pointing out that Crossroads 2003 wasn't high profile. ITV didn't even bother to advertise it on ITV nethermind in a newspaper.

Just saying 1988 was high profile thats all!

I knew there was one show I'd missed off my list - Brookside! Although the ending before the ending ruined it for me.

Re: Night and Day. Very good programme, just wrongly scheduled by ITV1 - it should have been a weekly 1 hour programme from the start. It's as much of a farce as Footballer's Wives, but very well acted and written.

TTTV's comments about Crossroads are totally valid in the context of this discussion.

Brookside's ending - despite gaining an attractive viewing figure and audience share - was still much more low-key than the long-running, ground-breaking show deserved. Fair enough, it was a shadow of its former self, but Channel Four had moved its transmission times and dates around so much that it was hard to keep track of when it was shown. Then they deliberately tucked it away in a late night slot so they had the excuse to say it wasn't doing well in the ratings.

Now, if Corrie, Emmerdale or EastEnders were ever to end (and of course they will one day) I expect there would be much more publicity. Ditto The Sky at Night! Wink

Not really bothered about Friends or SATC. But one thing I am dreading is the end of Frasier.

A truly fantastic programme, one of the best...if not THE BEST sitcom to ever come out of America. It has been the only spin off that has been more successful than its parent show. The acting really is second to none and truly brilliant performances from Kesley Grammar and David Hyde Pierce (who always manages to steal the show in some way!)

The show finale "Goodnight Seattle" goes out in America in the next few days and we're not that far behind here in the UK. It will be such a shame to see an award winning programme like this go. I know you shouldn't get over-excited about TV programmes and all that but it really is something you can just watch again and again. It's funny, it's intelectucal, but it's never afraid to appeal to the pure slapstick comedy that it does so brilliantly.
