FFS what was the point of that Great British Bake Off promo 10 mins into the programme ?

The BBC inserting promos into live sports programming is really getting on my nerves now - it's bad enough when it's for other sport, but for general **** it's even more insulting.

As I said in the sport thread the Wimbledon ad inserted at every end of set in the Queens coverage is incredibly annoying - and even more so they use these pointless VTs telling us who is playing who before a game begins rather than just sticking with the on court build up.

Agreed, and people complain that ITV sports coverage has ad breaks, the Beeb are sleep walking into effectively the same thing !

Let's face it - there's a valid reason why ITV show adverts.

I don't see why people are obsessing over the BBC showing a 30 second trail in a 40 minute build up to a game, ITV show several programme trails in addition to the commercials.

The fact that it was actually part of the build up linked in and out by Gary came across quite tacky. If it was between events like during the Olympics it was less so.

Imagine if Adrian Chiles said "Well we are not the only ones getting excited about the match tonight" and it cut to a clip of Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh talking about the football, as a glorified advert for The X Factor. We'd never stop hearing about it every day for about 10 years later.

Exactly. The advantage of sport on the BBC is no breaks but they're gifting that advantage for pointless promos - there is no justification at all for including a Bake Off promo in a World Cup programme.

I guess these are intended more for local directors to insert into the live coverage or use for analysis than to be rebroadcast as an interactive service - can't see anyone watching a match through Player Cam or Tactical View - not without another screen showing the main coverage anyway. That's why things like choosing the angle to watch a game soon got dropped in the early days of interactive TV.

P.S. Looking at the top three I'm guessing the first two are the same, while the third offers a feed that can be put to air with build up and post-match too. As well as commentary then is there a "World Feed" offering a more complete programme as well?

Which I don't like either, 30 years ago I found ad breaks on ITV and C4 perfectly acceptable, a necessary
evil, but now they just take the p1ss by showing ads AND promos.

There is no justification for the Beeb to interrupt ANY programme with promos, especially if there's
no connection with the programme being promoted

Yeah the third one is a complete programme intended for right holders(but i've not found one) who cant afford to put together their own studio, pundits etc.

Creepy, and crass. In fact the whole programme was a triumph of presentation over content, gimmicky 3D glass effect captions, pop up GMB sytle banners, like 'Countdown to Kick Off' Rolling Eyes , ridiculously hyped up

Totally disagree. Think the BBC are absolutely right to use modern presentation techniques like AR to try and push the boundaries a bit. Got to give ITV and Sky a run for their money. And the BBC are doing this stuff well. As someone who doesn't watch much football, I'm quite enjoying watching a programme with some production values rather than the normal snooze-fest that sport studios usually involve.

Or should we just do everything with a locked off camera and an Aston caption?

I have more sympathy for those who don't like trails (they aren't "ads") during programmes, but equally I can see the BBC marketing dept. wanting to ensure that one of their biggest audiences of the year see trails for other shows... It's too good an opportunity to miss. And some of them have been at least quite witty. Getting into them is always the clunky bit...

There's some bits of the AR which look good, like having images, stats or scores shown in the studio space, and there's others, like the players walking into the studio during half time, which just look weird and slightly creepy.

I personally really don't like the turning heads in the team line up - it takes what is normally a fairly quick segment and turns it into an excruciatingly long x-factor style build up. I quite like the effect when you've got two or three people doing it, or it's part of another element (like the F1 grid), but here it just seems to slow everything down for no real reason.

No, but everything in moderation, I think you said this recently Noggin, just because you can do something, doesn't necessarily mean you should ? I'm no football nut either, but I really don't see how any of that
enhances the punditry, other than to distract away from what's being said ?

They are in essence ads, and ads are in essence promotions, one and the same, a short sequence
to promote someone's goods or services. The BBC's USP was their programmes were not interrupted, it seems that's a thing of the past now, in this race to the bottom

I don't deny that, as are many TV commercials, but it's rather like reading a book, and suddenly there's a page printed in there advertising another book about something completely unrelated !
