So if this happened last year, guess who would have been last ..................
..... yup UK

(No reason to doubt the source's maths)]

Not only last but last by at least 9 points! Interesting that 4 of the Big 5 all take up the last 4 places. Maybe proof that they all take complete advantage of their automatic pass to the Final.

An awful song that deserved to be last, unlike Germany and Austria.

And the winner would have been the same and by a clear margin, rendering the whole thing rather pointless. The only change from what I can see is that Malta would have made the final over Azerbaijan.

There is nothing wrong with a slow build up of the scores, even if it does mean the winner is known early. Much better than basically just revealing the winner at the end, meaning viewers can go off elsewhere for an hour and come back for the result.

I guess this one belongs on the TV Tropes page They Changed It Now It Sucks then?

Any system with punishes dogs**t like Electro Velvet deserves to be trialled.

And if it stops them having an effective free pass to the grand final, even better.

By announcing the jury votes (which are awarded on Friday night during the jury dress rehearsal) by spokesperson, they can significantly reduce the duration of the show potentially. The jury votes can be announced as soon as the televoting has closed, as there will be no need to ratify televotes before spokesperson in-vision voting takes place (as they ere reporting results known since Friday evening).

This gives the show producers the duration of the bounce around 43 countries before they need a final televote number, rather than having to wait for televoting to be ratified before starting the spokesperson sequence. As a result it also, potentially, reduces the need for post-voting filler content (and also reduces the show budget as a result)...

I dunno, though, because surely that would mean people would be voting while they were already announcing the jury votes, which would make it seem pretty easy to influence the vote

I wasn't suggesting that. I'm suggesting that you don't now have to wait for the televotes to be verified before you start reporting the jury votes. I said 'as soon as the televoting has closed'. Currently you have to allow a good lump of time after the vote lines are closed before you announce the first results.

The pre-announce Jury prior to Televote verification is a good idea, however there's one very small issue that someone would complain about. If the televote verification failed for one or more countries then the substitution of the Jury vote for that country would occur. It's happened before. The preannounce of this during the verification could be complained about, and lead to some potentially awkward questions that would need to be parried. Minor I know but it'd need to be sorted in advance.

From the Oikotimes website:
Quote:
What if a country cannot deliver a valid jury result?
Both juries and televoters award 1 to 8, 10, and 12 points in each country. In order to secure the 50/50 balance between jury and televoting, a national televoting result can’t be used as backup result for the jury. Therefore, if – for whatever reason – a country cannot deliver a valid jury result, a substitute result is calculated by the jury result of a pre-selected group of countries. These groups and their composition have been pre-approved by the EBU permanent services and the Reference Group of the Eurovision Song Contest

It's the use of the Jury vote for a failed Televote that I'm referring to, not the reverse as in the Oiko item quoted above.

Sorry, wrong section. From the same website:

That's a significant change then, the makeup of these 'groups' needs to be kept secret until after the contest. This change does enable the pre audience vote validation reveal of Jury Votes.

They can go with the jury scores the minute the lines close as the juries still score based on the Friday night rehearsal.
