BBC unveils its coverage (May 2004)

The time is nearly upon us once more when England unites for a summer of football. The BBC's team is as always much better than the opposition, as unveiled today:

BBC Press Office

Of note (for those who are as sad as me when it comes to such matters), the BBC theme tune is a remix of Basement Jaxx's Good Luck....quite a catchy tune. In other news today, England's official tournament song is a new version of "All Together Now" by The Farm (see here)

The BBC's coverage will of course be on BBC television, bbc.co.uk and bbci, and will of course pulverise ITV in the ratings (except sadly England's first two games, including the crucial France game are on ITV, and we *always* lose on ITV in European championships Shocked )

However, the presentation bit Rolling Eyes (and this may not prove so popular)...on closer examination of the press pack, I found this portion:

Quote:
“Contractually we have to take the host
broadcaster’s match coverage and graphics,”
Phil explains.“The only thing that I can do
differently is to cut in a few of my own shots
and put on a clock with the BBC ident. We
have three match cameras to pick out extra
shots, which I will cut in to the host pictures –
for the England match for example we will get
quite neutral coverage so I will cut in extra
shots of, say, Sven or Beckham, to give the
coverage more of an English slant.”

Taking the host’s coverage has caused another
headache for Phil, who’s already anticipating a
few complaints from viewers with widescreen
televisions.

“The hosts are only offering the match
coverage in 4x3 [the standard TV picture
format], hence widescreen viewers will have
black bars down the side of their picture for
all the games
, as happened with the last World
Cup in Japan. It’s unfortunate but there’s
absolutely nothing we can do about that
because that is what is generated by the
hosts,” he sighs.

Of all the channels who are taking the Euro
2004 coverage worldwide, it’s really only the
British ones – both the BBC and ITV – who
regularly broadcast in widescreen, therefore it
seems that we’ll have to wait a while longer
for the first-ever widescreen football
tournament. The good news is that all the rest
of the BBC’s coverage will be available in
widescreen – any studio coverage, features etc
will be free of those annoying black bars.

Quite an interesting read that press pack though

Like the Sweden and Denmark games in Japan? Rolling Eyes

Admittedly, that was the World Cup, but still...

Also, England lost their last crucial game in Euro 2000 to Romania, exclusively live on the BBC. Rolling Eyes

BBC have Ian Wright, enough said.

Re: black bars at the side.

Really annoys me about BBC Sport that even if the action is 4:3, the programme is shown in widescreen so on a 4:3 TV, the programme cuts to widescreen, ending up with the central 4:3 picture, meaning you have to zoom in yourself!

I believe a lot of the Olympic Games is being done in high definition, which means 16:9 for some of the games i'm guessing...?

What with the matches being shown at 5pm and 7.45pm it should cause some interesting schedules. What with these times falling right across the all important news and prime time slots

Not sure why the original poster is making such a fuss of the BBC line up being better than the as yet unannounced ITV line up, besides a few final stages games you have to watch both channels anyway!

BBC schedules could be all over the place for the last part of June, because Euro 2004 and Wimbledon overlap, so for a couple of days both BBC One and BBC Two will probably be dominated by live sport (even more so than we usually get over the Wimbledon fortnight).

That will be fun! Anyone remember the Summer of 1996? It was like this as it had The Olympics, Wimbledon and Euro 96 pratically happening at once? This annoyed many people, the only normal channel was Channel 4! Though this time round we have BBCi, so I take it there will be loads of Multi Video Streaming or whatever they usually have available.

Wimbledon starts on June 21st and by that stage all matches are at 7.45pm, so there should be much of a problem. That is of course unless Henman walks on court at 7.45pm during BBC2 coverage......

It'll be interesting where the soaps are slotted in, not to mention the ITV News when they are showing a 5pm kick off.

Because ITV always mess up big tournaments, partly because they're resigned to humiliating defeat whatever they do. It's just one of those things- when the country unites, it unites with the BBC, whether that be in major news or sporting events. Sure Des is OK, but even he can't rescue coverage butchered by adverts, generally passionless summerisers and mediocre commentators. Whilst Ian Wright is very annoying on entertainment shows and on the radio, there's something about his passion for England that just makes him great in the studio for the England games- the combo with Linekar, Hansen, Wright and Schmeichal/Lawrenson is just unstoppable.

The fact is that if you had a choice of BBC or ITV for every match, nobody in their right mind would choose ITV- and the ratings have shown that....I believe the viewing figures for England v Brazil two years ago were something like 3 million for ITV and 13 million for BBC. On top of that you had many more people watching in pubs- every one of which tunes into the BBC- I remember nearly being involved in a riot during Euro 96 when my local accidently stuck on the ITV coverage of the England v Germany match.
