According to The Guardian, ESPN America is to close and be replaced by ESPN. The new ESPN will show the premiership games and some American sport.

Makes sense really, the matches alone aren't enough for a whole channel.

Although understandable in terms of time, it's interesting to see that Sky will be providing production for the ESPN match coverage itself.

They already produce the matches for ESPNStar Asia, as well as other foreign providers including Setanta America.

You can make that ESPN UK & Ireland - at least for next season - after the announcement today by the Premier League that ESPN have won the same two packages in ROI as they have in the UK - no word about the ROI-only Saturday 3pm games yet...

Sky always produce it, in ESPN Star's case, Sky probably send out a clean feed via fibre (which will have the down the interviews I guess as well and players warming up), then just use the embedded soundtrack (sky's commentry), they may be an audio track with just the commentators without Sky's whooshy effects going on.

whosshy effects are on the broadcasts that sport een, sky sports italia and other european broadcasters show.

Anyway, I thought the telecasts of the games were done by IMG as that is whats shown as the endcap on the European broadcasts of the same game that sky shows, as well as the other live EPL games

The TWI coverage uses their own graphics, they take the clean HD feed off Sky/Setanta, overlay their own presentation (and voiceover sometimes), and record the interviews off the clean feed.

SPL TV deal completed with SKY & ESPN

At today’s AGM, the clubs agreed a £65 million deal with Sky and ESPN to screen 60 live Clydesdale Bank Premier League matches each season across the UK and Ireland.

The deal will last until the end of season 2011/12 with the SPL having an option to extend for a further two seasons.

Sky and ESPN will both cover 30 live Clydesdale Bank Premier League games each season.

I think you'll find it's the other way round - the match coverage doesn't come from the likes of Sky and Setanta/ESPN.

The coverage is produced for the Premier League by TWI, the international broadcasters take their packaged version and the UK based ones (Sky, ESPN and the BBC) get the cleans

Good news for Virgin Media XL TV customers:

Quote:
Virgin Media has secured a carriage agreement for ESPN's standard definition and high definition channels.

On August 3, ESPN America will be replaced in the UK by a new subscription-based ESPN service available in standard and high definition. It will carry the Premier League matches acquired after Setanta's collapse along with sports currently shown on ESPN America. ESPN has also recently acquired additional football rights from the SPL, MLS and top divisions in Europe.

ESPN and ESPN HD will be offered free of charge to customers taking Virgin Media's top XL tier of television service. The channels will also be available to customers on the M and L tiers for £8 per month if they subscribe to Sky Sports or £10 standalone. All Virgin Media television customers will receive the channels free in August.

ESPN HD will only be available to those customers who take Virgin's high definition V+ PVR.

I like "All Virgin Media television customers will receive the channels free in August." and the discount for Sky Sports people (like me!)

May finally have a reason to chuck my TUTV box!
