I can confirm that Classic EastEnders are indeed at source, 4:3. Not sure whose bright idea it was to crop them.
(obvious, but it seems they've dumbed down the response for non-TV geeks)
Although since the playout provider change, the UKTV channels have been showing 4:3 programmes as 16:9 pillarbox rather than proper 4:3 switching as previously.

Every episode's been 4:3 on broadcast, so it's only on UKTV play it's being messed up.

I watched Only Fools on Gold through the Now TV app on my phone and that was in stretchy vision on the SD channel.

Apologies for this if answered already, but I'm not going to dig around in the thread, but why are the episode lengths all over the place currently? Is this still C19 related or is there more to it?

Yes, I think it's due to the extra time it takes for them to do the split screen, single camera filming and the likes to make the social distancing have less impact on screen.
