Honestly, I don't see the big deal. Loads of companies putting huge effort (besides Aldi) into their adverts that have taken months to film and create, and they barely get a mention. But JL could release an incredibly middle-of-the-road advert and, just because their logo is on the end of it, it gets more attention than the Waitrose and Boots adverts combined.

I don't think this is middle-of-the road - I quite like it. But part of that is just because I like Elton John (although I'm not necessarily a fan). Oh, and what is JL's obsession with 'Your Song'? It's the second time they've used it in a campaign - Christmas 2010 had Ellie Goulding's cover of it.

And, yes, the logo is terrible. Sue me.

I wouldn’t say they are obsessed with Your Song. They did it once in the conventional John Lewis covers style. But niw they have Elton John on board they simply decided it was the song of his that works better in their Christmas ad.

And what’s wrong with the Aldi campaign? It’s arguably been most successful thus far this Christmas. It feels very Christmassy and shows off it’s products.

I think the problem with the Aldi campaign was that they ended an advert on a cliffhanger and failed to continue it. And also they are all mental.

I personally like the Waitrose campaign the best - it's funny, straight to the point and direct. None of this animated carrot stuff.

The combined John Lewis and Waitrose ad a couple of months ago was better - and more festive. Both seemed to promote upcoming movie biopics though and I think that might be why this misses the mark. They're usually much more random.

Also of course they set the bar for themselves so high it is tricky to top it now.

I’ve only just got around to watching the John Lewis advert and whilst I like the music, it does nothing for me and if anything seems fairly unseasonal. In fact that seems to be a trend this year with many more companies opting for themes and music that don’t relate to Christmas or don’t feel festive... or maybe I’m becoming more miserable as I age.

I wonder if The rebrand ad was planned as a Christmas ad but they decided to use it for the rebrand.

Is there anything yet from House of Fraser or are they not bothering this year given their troubles?

Also nothing from Morrisons yet?

Morrison's are using the same one as last year.

In Ireland; Eir had began putting out a Christmas ad campaign for selling their new broadband subscription offers to upcoming customers living in The Republic of Ireland. They include the free access to Eir Sport & BT Sport in their subscription offer. One of their ad's has Santa & a little girl looking at the sport's coverage on a tablet while sitting inside the living room from the little girls house.

Here is the ad that I watched on RTÉ.

A playlist for the rest.

It’s a little cheeky of eir now to be trying to tie people into 12 month or longer contracts with the promise of free BT Sport, a promise they will only be able to honour for nine-odd more months.

Give them their due better then last years, and having use to work for this company for them to actually pay for a 60 second advert and a real song is a big thing for them!
