Don't know, but I predict it's lower.

Milkshake tends to get between 100k-300k, CITV roughly the same though it's rare for anything to go above 250k.

Then it is close. But would a merger boost ratings, even by a bit?

It wouldn't boost ratings but I can imagine Milkshake is a lot more profitable that CITV given that they have a number of internationally successful children's series (I've been told that C5 take a percentage of the rights of some of their shows but I don't know how true that is) plus Milkshake itself is a much more marketable brand which has had its own live tour and IIRC a magazine.

Whilst running the children's strand on TV isn't particularly profitable in itself you've got to remember that the rights side of things can be particularly lucrative. For example Zodiak Media (RDF, IWC)'s Zodiak Kids department sells the rights to numerous kids shows and licenses toys etc across the world and is one of the most profitable, if not the most profitable, departments in that company.

But again I imagine the children's element would be the last thing on ITV's mind if they were actually considering a bid for C5.

If you'd asked me a few years ago did I think BT would launch its own sports channels and show Premier League football I'd have thought you were having a laugh, so anything's possible now really.

There is a bit of a difference between launching high end Sports subscription channels (initially used as a loss leader) and buying a free to air broadcaster totally reliant on fluctuating advertising revenues.

I agree that it is highly doubtable BT will want to buy Channel 5. But my point was that it was unexpected when BT successfully bid for Premier League rights. We may have another surprise with the buyer of Channel 5, it may not be any of the companies we would think of or have been mentioned in this thread. Channel 5 may not even be sold off, who's to know?

It should be sold. If not now, this decade.

Why should it be sold? Desmond has turned C5 around, made a profit and really transformed the company.

Sounds like the ideal time to sell it.

None of them are good contenders really, I hope ITV bids, but I fear they won't.
