I get the feeling it’ll be The BB in just name alone really.

Most people are hyped about this due to the nostalgia of watching The BB before. But they won’t be the same faces that you’d recognise as hardly any BAME faces were on.

And you couldn’t have Mo joined by Denise or Gaby as that defeats the point of why it’s being brought back.

I’m intrigued and kind of excited as to what they will do, but also of the mind that this likely won’t be The BB we all knew and loved, it will be very different.
It’ll be a show of the same name and maybe in the same house, but potentially not quite how we remember.

Which I think is the right way to go about a revival. Bringing back Vital Statistics, More Tea Vicar and Gagging for It would be the way to celebrate in a one off anniversary special, but a new version like this with just enough grounding in the original format (e.g. similar presenting lineup, based in a house, crew interaction, maybe separate “on the bed” interviews etc) could be the way to guarantee a possible future...

Who knows, but it would be great if it’s done right.

I can see them trying a new format with this but lets not forget, each time C4 tried a new format with the show they quickly undone it and went back to what people loved before.

But then as ITV Studios own Planet 24 and therefore the interlectual copyright to TBB, isn't this just ITV Studios offshoot making one programme to go up against another ITV Studios production company?
I suppose Channel 4 have said the magic words 'this will be a one off' and that's placated ITV somewhat.

Although thinking about it - it would be slightly easier to get ITN to bring back the Channel 4 Daily for one day, and use BAME presenters and reporters on that, as there's far journos and presenters in newsrooms and on screen than there was back in the very early 1990's when it was originally on.

It might be slightly easier but it would also be much easier to just do nothing. Obviously they’ve decided to do something so they might as well do it right and use the breakfast show format people remember and that will make an impact.

Suprisingly though yesterday's announcement made zero Impact on Twitter!, the place where you can get pretty much anything to trend.

Yes, I saw very little chatter about it and even the usual clickbaiters didn't try to trick people into thinking it was a full time comeback - only the Radio Times went with a headline that said "Mo Gilligan to front Big Breakfast revival on C4", but then explained it was a one-off in the opening paragraph.

I’ll echo many views on here that this is a blatant backdoor pilot. It makes absolutely no sense to bring back the format/name for any other reason. It would have made more sense to launch “Black Takeover Day” with a one off, breakfast show specific to that event but I suspect (well, hope) that C4 saw potential in making it a BB revival to draw in viewers and allow it to be something which might be able to work outside a themed day.

I’m very excited about it, and can see them using the original house for this as it is a rented filming location with much better access for temporary OB trucks and the like than back in the day. If it becomes a longer run or series though, it will be from a new location as the house wouldn’t be a full time option.

I don’t think it has to be viewed as backdoor pilot at all. C4 probably just want as much publicity as possible for this takeover so they’re just pressing the nostalgia button for easy headlines.

Also I wouldn’t be so sure about them using the original house. Just because it’s possibly rentable, there may also be multiple tenants in it. It’s so well-hidden from the towpath now with massive hedges (last time I walked past a year ago) you can’t assume the owners want to go through the fuss of one day of broadcasting given how tranquil it is round there.

I agree with you regarding them using the name and nostalgia for maximum publicity, and I take back the “backdoor pilot” title - it’s too strong. I don’t actually think it’s anything that official. But I do think it’s highly likely both C4 and the production team will approach the episode and evaluate how it fares with an ulterior motive of possibly doing more. Similar to the Best of Big Brother shows on E4 a few months ago - they served a specific purpose, but equally give the broadcaster some stats/info to base (or reject!) any future proposals to do more with the brand.

I would agree fully with your point about the house if it was just a private family dwelling and the owners wanted to keep it that way, but they already have it listed as a filming location to hire and have done for some years. It has also been featured in many shows since it was converted into a home:

Of course, a live show with all the infrastructure and rehearsal needed is different to opening up your home to just a small crew, and realistically the dates may not work out, the budget may not allow it, the owners may well want to keep distanced from the house’s recognisable past etc. However, I’d assume a call will be put in at the very least given the location is synonymous with the show and would undeniably lift the nostalgia factor tenfold if it was used.

For next year's one-off Big Breakfast return (I wouldn't call it a revival unless it was permanent) if for whatever reason they can't use the former BB House at Lock Keepers Cottages, they could adapt the studio they're currently using for Steph's Packed Lunch at Leeds Dock.

That's very generous of you to infer that the studio will still be in use by then.

Well I think the assumption is it probably won't be but will still be at C4's disposal.

With all the speculation about Alison Hammond lately although I'm not sure she'd be quite right as the main co-host for this, she'd be absolutely perfect for doing the On the Bed interviews.
