What happened? What happened? Oh, woe is me to be stuck in the States!

Just watched BBC Wales closedown...

Announcer David C:

Cue clock at 2.56

'Now we wouldn't normally do this, but this is the last time you will see the BBC clock. From the morning BBC One Wales is getting a bit of a makeover, and you can see it from nine'

Cue balloon

'And this is the last time you will see the balloon, from myself David Canham and all of us here at Broadcasting House in Cardiff, goodnight and enjoy the balloon'

he lets the balloon run for a little while.

Much nicer than Englands Closedown

We had what started out as an old-style closedown, with the clock faded-on from black, confirmation of the new-look from 9am (not 6am) and confirmation, too, that it is the end of the clock.

Then, when the Northern Ireland announcer said 'Goodnight' at the top of the minute, where the National Anthem used to come on, we had a full balloon montage, and fade to black, then BBC News 24.

Very well done to Michael Selby and the other BBC Northern Ireland Continuity Directors.

Still no news from the hillsides and valleys?

Nice... but not as spectacular as BBC NI's...

Well, hopefully, video coverage in the morning...PC is refusing to co-operate.

Did anyone get a videoclip of BBC NI's closedown?

Seems the Welsh and Irish 'minnows' upstaged our bigger cousins. As usual.

Mike,

Go to bed. Good Friday's not a public holiday here remember.

(Though some of us are off anyway. I'll e-mail you at your site with various thoughts/questions, etc. Cheers.)

So that's it then ... no more clock. I guess it's like pulling off a band-aid: they want to get rid of both the globe and the clock both at the same time and not prolong the pain of it all.

Well, I for one salute the balloon and clock, and lament their loss. My thoughts and prayers are with their families. Smile

Well I've just woken up! Looks like I didn't miss anything rare in England. If anyone is still up record the 6am and 9am junctions-they might be worth watching.

Nah, breakfast is coming straight on from News 24. Now I have to wait a whole 3 hours!! I s'pose there's always the trailers on BBC Two...

S4C has Why? The beeb provide S4C's news but they have nothing else to do with S4C - if S4C pres want to run a clock then they will.

It's no different to the controller of BBC2 scrapping the BBC2 clock a few years ago whilst BBC1 has retained it's clock right up until today - the clock will stay on S4C until they decide to scrap it.

Well their clock got a new look when BBC News went widescreen, so I'm assuming it's the BBC telling them to use it as the BBC1 does before main news programmes.
