They can hardly do much to the World News set. Perhaps a new desk, but they can't change the background because it's a live newsroom.

I doubt it needs much anyway. Perhaps a lick of white paint over the cream, but otherwise it fits the
' new corporate look' (c) Neil Green 16.12.03 quite well.

To be honest, I watch BBC World for most of my news, and I think the current news set fits in perfectly with the new look - I don't think anything needs doing to it. I hate this idea whereby every studio has to look the same - surely there can be some variation? Why does BBC World need a white desk just because News 24 has one? The current desk was installed for the introduction of The World Today back in September 2001, as it works perfectly for the opening shots.

I agree. In fact I don't think the programme needs changing at all. Apart from Kirsty Lang, shes ok - she would be better on a flufffy programee like Breakfast or the Six O Clock News, and not something as serious as BBC Four News. I think Peter Sissons should front it, or Lyse Doucet. I don't know what experience Kirsty Lang has, but whenever I look at her, she just reminds me of a mop. Shocked

I think Kirsty suits the programme actually. She previously presented Channel 4 News, which you could argue is the direction that they want to take the new programme.

All well and good I say - but I'm waiting to see this analysis on News 24 first - never mind about BBC4 or World!

I don't see what it needs doing to it apart from calling something other than "BBC World News" on World, everything is called that, it's branding stupidity.

Anyhoo, I hope the theme is similar to the current as it is IMo the best of the current set, that and Dispatch Box's old theme.

IIRC, Kirsty worked in the 'foreign' field at Channel 4 News, so she is quite suited to BBC Four News. I did like George Alagiah anchoring it, but Kirsty is just as good. I think Brian Hanrahan is a good relief presenter, but I think more use should be made of Lyse Doucet and Nisha Pillai on the programme. Nisha only does about 2 or 3 days a week on BBC World nowadays, so she could be used more often on the 4 News. The only person I think they should get rid of is Zeinab Badawi, although she does only fill in occasionally.

One thing that is annoying me about this relaunch is the necessity of it. I mean 4 News has looked 'odd' since it started two years ago, and last week, it finally matched in with the rest of BBC News presentation. Why, then, have they now decided to change it? The set is good (a bit bland in real life, but with the correct lighting, it looks fab on screen), and the graphics suit the programme's style. I agree with Hymagumba in that the music is the best aspect - I hope they don't change it! David Lowe really found the right theme for that style of programme, IMO.

I think Kirsty was also Paris Correspondent for the BBC before she joined Channel Four.

And before that she was a producer with World Service Radio

And she also worked at BBC World Service Radio:

BBC Press Office posted:
Kirsty joined Channel 4 News in 1998 as a studio presenter and news reporter. She began her journalism career as a BBC news trainee in 1986 and worked on programmes including Today and the World at One. From 1989 to 1991 she was the Central European reporter for BBC World Service based in Budapest, covering the fall of the Berlin Wall and Balkans conflict, and went on to be the BBC’s Paris correspondent for both television and radio. After a period reporting for BBC TWO’s Newsnight and prior to joining Channel 4 Kirsty worked at the Sunday Times as their Paris correspondent.

The above passage shows that she has had a lot of experience in foreign affairs!

There are no plans for changes to the main BBC World Set.

The BBC Four set will be installed during the periods the main World Studio is off air.
