This is just a thought, but do you think Sky News could launch a true internation version of the channel, or do you think news channel output has become too saturated?

I would quite like to see a World version of Sky News, with programmes put together from around the world. Programmes on Asian news, American news, Africa and so forth.

Do you think it would help to boost Sky News' profile globally and would it be more interesting for international viewers?

It might just be me (or maybe I misunderstood the original poster) but there already is an international feed of Sky News minus clock and ticker, as previously posted on here.

Why the need for another one?

Sky News is already brodacast around the world and consistently has a very good agenda between domestic and world news. Unlike ITV and BBC News 24 which only broadcast to this country (officially) - so they tend to favour domestic stuff over world news but Sky has always been careful to maintain a fair balance.

An international viewer is not under the illusion that it's a UK channel mainly serving a UK audience but then most people watching abroad are probably ex-pats anyway.

Yep as a viewer of if you like "international news channels", Sky News is a really good source for UK viewers, by the way something of interesting note on Sky Italia, the Italians opt in their own ad on top of the breakfiller.

I think a distinction could be made between Sky News and Sky World, for example, in a similar way that BBC World is different from News 24.

Sky's international coverage is generally very good though, although as a viewer residing abroad, I find their bulletins quite often too UK-focussed and parochial in that respect.

Yes, that is what I meant, as the current Sky News international feed, offer the same output as the UK one.

I guess the real issue is whether it would make any money.

Sky run Sky News from and in the UK as a loss-leader in many ways - they gain credibility as a broadcaster (and with MPs) by running a decent news channel - which gives them greater weight when they are lobbying for changes to UK broadcasting. The channel doesn't - AFAIK - make them any money though...

However a Sky World News operation wouldn't have the same political benefits - and would lose them even more money...

Whilst it might be nice - with CNNi and BBC World already in the global news marketplace - I don't see Sky wishing to lose more money by starting a new service?

I think the international version now is good enough - Sky have a good mix of domestic and international issues. Sky News, apparently, planned to launch in USA, but Fox prevented it, as there were chances that the Fox News Channel would lose viewers.

Still, there is Sky News Australia, Sky TG 24 in Italy, and the Sky News International version. I don't believe Sky would want to spend money developing the international service.

I am impressed with Sky TG24, very nice graphics, Sky Italia channels all have decent idents and gfxs.
