It’s only product placement if payment has been made. It clearly was only present as a tribute to a weekly gag.

It wouldn't be 'product placement', it may be 'undue prominence'

I can imagine Simon grabbing a bottle of Blue Nun after reading this thread.

Like most people it’s not unusual for Andrew take some weeks off in the year.

Yes, but it's very unusual for Andrew to miss TW. In fact, I can't remember it ever happening before.

He has missed a show towards the end of previous series, maybe even the last in the run. I'm sure one year someone else hosted (Eddie Mair?), and Andrew was on as a guest in (I think) New York.

Emily Maitlis hosted it once, too. I’m not sure if Jo Coburn has ever hosted it, or just appeared on it. But certainly they’ve done well over the years to find qualified and capable journalists who all have their own distinctive dry wit and calm demeanour to fill in for Andrew. Never a sense Mair/Maitlis/McCoy were trying to copy Andrew’s style, yet they all fit the format and tone of the programme. I can’t see other prominent presenters like Nick Robinson or Huw Edwards pulling it off so easily.

I feel like I’ve seen John Pienaar present once.

I reckon Huw could do it, the odd occasion where we see his sense of humour suggests it works work.

Emily's was well showcased on Storyfix back in the day of course.

Scripted I’m sure Huw could, so for This Week he’d be fine. It’s the election nights that will suffer from Huw being devoid of any off the cuff humour. Which Dimbleby did with ease in addition to bringing the gravity to proceedings.

Huw definitely has a sense of humour, it just isn't instantly noticeable. It's more deadpan, a bit like Jack Dee.

I look forward to his appearance on Live at the Apollo then.

I know Andrew has regularly namedropped the drink over the years but with Simon McCoy I lost count of the number of times that Blue Nun got mentioned last night, as well as actually having a bottle of it sitting nice and prominently on the desk. Surely this was pushing the boundaries on advertising on the BBC? It literally came across like a blatant product placement and This Week endorsement.

Have you cashed the cheque from McVities yet?

Huw's got a great sense of humour, the fact he's joined in with the majesty that is Huws at Ten illustrates that. I loved that BBC1 Christmas trailer the other year when he played piano with Tom Jones.

There was an old website devoted to that brilliant BBC Choice series The RDA where mentioned that for a week they began to monitor the exact time Huw left the building after reading the news. And then he happily came on the show to chat about it, and was very funny.
