Especially as they seem to show absolutely no correlation whatsoever to the Washington skyline...

The washington bureau is too cramped, but Ive been told they will be moving. The plamas just show supposedely LIVE views of Washington landmarks with in DVD quality - thats what kevin anderson told me.

With the BBC having such a big operation based here, its about time they moved.

The BBC operation in Washington only moved into bigger offices a few years ago so unlikely a move is on the cards.
And yes they're plasmas in the main studio. The small self op is now a CSO with a live shot of the White House available. it used to have a small plasma as well.

Actually the Bureau will be moving early next year. It's to do with the lease running out on the current office. They are only moving next door.

Those of you who watched the 2300BST programme last night would have seen that Tania was outside on a roof overlooking the White House, rather than in the studio. This implies that the studio is not usable at the moment. So as I say it may be worth keeping an eye on the Washington output over the next couple of weeks. There is an election coming up you know!

Looks like tonight is the first of the US Presedential debate. I know BBC News and Sky will be covering it LIVE, does anyone know if ITV News have a special programme?? I wonder who will present the BBC News programme?

Personally I cannot wait. Bush is such a bafoon when it comes to TV interviews, let alone a LIVE debate with a presedential cadidate. This should be very entertaining television.
I think you are letting your Political views and prejudices get the better of you. Bush did well, as did Kerry. Also the consultation of a Dictionary, by you, wouldn't go amiss.

The 'Dead Ringers' version of Bush certainly does ! Laughing

'My fellow Amoebas' etc !

God it must have been a short lease - but I know the building they're in houses some other broadcasters as well. And as you say keep an eye out on that studio - I feel an election restyle coming on

The studio is undergoing a makeover for the elections. Ian Pannell presented from the CSO studio, indicating work will or has either commenced.

Brilliant bit in tonight's debate.

Kerry: It's not WHEN but IF we're attacked. Sorry, it's not IF but WHEN we're attacked.

Charles Gibson (ABC): Senator, I want to return to something you said, you said it's not WHEN but IF, do you therefore think an attack on the US is inevitable?

Kerry: That's right. It's not IF but WHEN we're attacked.

Cue some very confused looking audience members.

They are DVD quality I believe for the simple reason that they are recorded images being replayed by DVD players... I'm almost 100% certain they aren't "live".

AIUI the scenes were shot in various locations around Washington, using a 16:9 camera rotated through 90 degrees.

(I don't think you ever see snow out of the "windows" as a result...)

The old 'windows" were definitely plasmas fed by DVD's. There was a winter version and a summer version both with a day and night option.

AFAIK The new version also uses DVD's but on projectors rather than plasmas.

The second Washington studio uses a CSO studio which is fed with a live shot of the White House. This has just a single position and is mainly used for DTL's.

The BBC also has use of a live position from the roof of a building overlooking the White House. They use this for important events.
