There isn't a separate opt for Border Scotland at the moment. There's just the one "Border" on satellite.
Yep I knew that lol, but the whole of Border either took Scotland Tonight or the Scottish Election results in the past. I even think it was both...
In the olden days the whole of the Border region was treated to a half-hour special after the Manx general election. Totally irrelevant to 90 per cent of the station's audience, but super-relevant to 10 per cent.
We'll never see that sort of coverage again.
Border was odd because it had to cover three different jurisdictions. Almost guaranteed to alienate parts of the audience at different times.
The Isle of Man is even more lost now it's in Granadaland. Surely they could manage a local Mux for the island which could cover such things?
How would they make money by doing so?
That's the question that will always be asked.
While the island represented 10 per cent of the Border audience in the three- and four-channel era, and when the IBA dished out franchises on a quality-of-service basis, there was more of an impetus to do this sort of thing.
Now it's switched region, the island represents just over 1 per cent of the Granada audience. So it's never going to happen.
Also, around 80 per cent of homes have satellite. Penetration is very high. ITV plc is not going to pay for another channel for very occasional Manx opt outs.
Meanwhile, a lot of Freeview viewers (especially in the north) still watch Border directly from Caldbeck. In the West, UTV from Black Mountain is watched in some areas. Indeed, Digital Switchover had it as the recommended station for Kirk Michael.
So, the already very small audience is fractured more.
Looks like the old Border Scot are not getting the chance to see this Scotland Tonight Referendum Special...

Depends who "they" is.
I'm not sure it would be particularly lucrative, but surely the IoM govt could do something here, and help set up a Local MUX like the ones which will soon be appearing across the uk.

A few years ago, I produced a report for the Isle of Man telecommunications Commission on the viability of a local TV station. The bottom line - it's absolutely not viable. And the IoM Government certainly hasn't spare cash to construct a MUX and find programming for it.

Maybe I wasn't clear. I don't mean an opt-out for the IoM, I mean a local mux run locally, subsidised by the IoM government.
But even then it may well not be financially viable.

Thanks. It's a shame really. In a way, the IoM is more in need of a local tv service than an English region, given that it is not even part of the UK and has its own government.

Doesn't Manx Radio have the politics of the IoM adequately covered, or has that now been diluted down to the mush that mainland ILRs are now ?

What's happening on Tyne tees & Border lately regrading presenters? Seems to be a lot of correspondents filling in. This week I've seen Smon O'Rourke, Rachel Bullock & Kenny Toal on this week, seems a lot is Pam or Ian away or have I missed something?

I know! That Helen Ford womans voice is really irritating. I think Kenny Toal would be good to take over the 6pm programme, if Ian were to leave. Or would the job go to Tim Backshall?
