Yep, they used to use a locked off camera shot on the balcony but when Pompey went into administration they seemed to have enough space to fit several guests and a presenter in there. I'd always assumed it was quite small by the way they'd make reports and guests stand out on the balcony in all weather.
I think Late Kick Off was from a re-dressed Studio B in Southampton, but I could be wrong. Not sure that the Portsmouth facilities at the Spinnaker Tower are that extensive.
The Portsmouth studio is indeed at Gunwharf. In the past it hasn't been at all extensive in terms of facilities and when lives have made it onto South Today it's more often than not been a presenter in front camera pointing out across towards Gosport. However several weeks ago, South Today planned a special opt at 7.30pm to cover Pompey going into administration and the Portsmouth facilities were upgraded to be able to cope with a few guests with 3 cameras (I think), a backdrop and a basic lighting rig. The programme didn't make it to air because Pompey manged to negotiate an extra week to find the money it owed but if LKO came from Gunwharf on Monday night, then clearly things have been left in situ. How this programme was to be vision mixed I don;t know - presumably some kit from one of their trucks was installed... there's only a single microwave link (I think) from Portsmouth to Southampton (via Rowridge).
I had heard however, that LKO was coming from a dressed bit of BBC Southampton's newsroom, with the old soft set from Studio-A... That would make more sense as there's very little other space at Portsmouth AIUI...
Hmm maybe I jumped the gun a bit, what I assumed to be an actual wall in Portsmouth may have just been set dressing which they have since taken back to Southampton. The sound quality on LKO was certainly better than it was in Portsmouth when Pompey finally did go into administration.
Thinking about it, pretty obvious it wouldn't be Portsmouth.
Ian Axton is now Steves Scotts "replacement" on the Westcountry tonight, former Meridian East presenter will cover Steve Scott as he goes to become a Sport correspondent at ITV News, is very nice to see Ian again shame he cant be next to Sanghetta though :/
Hmm so much for him being a possible replacement for Fred when he leaves in July then
if
he does that is...
Seen a few ex Meridianites turn up on other regions recently, one on Wescountry, forget his name. Also that young chubby reporter from Merdian South (name?) he's now on Wales Tonight I noticed
