Yes, Fred was on the presentation team from day one of that series. It started in 1966.

BTW I think he joined Southern TV around 1964ish.

Thanks. I thought I knew him from somewhere. Laughing

The longest serving national newscaster is actually PETER SISSONS, who was on ITN Newscasts back in the late sixties.

Indeed. There's also David Jessel - he's been on quite a number of years as well, although he's on BBC World now, so he doesn't qualify as 'national'.

David Jessel along with Jon Snow were newsreaders on LBC. Certainly Jon Snow read the news on their first day, Oct 8th 1973. I remember hearing him on that day.

So that makes Jon Snow a newsreader of almost 33 years service, though he didn't join ITN until 1978.

Micheal Buerk was with BBC Radio Bristol from 1970, another contender ?

Indeed David Jessel was the first voice on LBC when it went on air at 6am that day. It was widely reported he was so nervous that he was sick in the waste paper bin shortly before going on air.

He is an acquired taste (Jessel), but seems to make the whole newsreading thing look effortless here on BBC World. I always feel that he is itching to take on a more pivotal role at the channel - he investigative programmes in the 80s and 90s in the UK were very good. Reading the autocue is plain for the man. He comes into his own when he has a live guest in the studio.

It was longer than 40 years. Mike joined TTTV as a newsreader/reporter/continuity anno in 1962, which makes it 43 years.

TTTV made a point of calling Mike the UK's longest continuously-serving local news presenter, so surely there must be some truth in that.

Of course, FD will take that role now since MN has retired.

As for the Dine(n)age spelling, I think all you need to do is look at the quality of the entries for "Fred Dinenage" on Google vs "Fred Dineage". The former are largely official pages (meridiantv.com, imdb, wikipedia etc etc) whereas for Dineage, the pages are mostly for forum pages and the like, and Google itself asks if you meant "Fred Dinenage". Not conclusive but I think it's a safe bet.

Always amusing when Nick Hervey gets something wrong Laughing
