Tonights Look East with Janine Machin in Cambridge due to a technical fault in Norwich.

I'm wondering what the issue was. They managed a weather forecast using CSO. I was half expecting that to be done by London.

I've always assumed the Oxbridge plan was one of the reasons the old Cambridge studios were retained for so long.

I could never understand whether as a geographical area joining Cambridge and Oxford would have actually made sense.

Indeed. The very idea of viewers in places as disparate as Highworth and Wisbech suddenly finding themselves to be in the same "region" seems ridiculous.

Goodness knows what the actual region name (as in "BBC East" etc) would've been, but you can bet your granny that the news service would've been called something neutral/ambiguous/meaningless (e.g. "Compass" or whatever).

Yes, I know that the BBC East region as is has a similar disparity (e.g. Lowestoft & Milton Keynes), but at least there's the West sub-opt to help the situation.

Another full split at 6:30 tonight for Look East, with Stewart White on location at a gymnasium Max Whitlock uses whilst Susie was in the studio with the rest of the headlines in the East, whilst the West got Janine Machin for the full half hour. Both very Olympics-heavy programmes, in the West the rest of the day's news perhaps got ten minutes or so of airtime, whilst the remainder of the programme was Olympics coverage - I appreciate that it's difficult to strike the right balance during the Olympics here, but I'm not entirely sure either programme got it entirely right.

Sadly still empty too!

When you both say 'Old Cambridge Studios' do you mean the small Hills Road site where Radio Cambridgeshire was based, and where the Look East TV operation in Cambridge was also based (initially a DTL studio and single edit suite, then expanding with a small Close Up opt coming from the local radio centre cubicle, then a larger studio where the old radio newsroom used to be)? The main building was shared with Logica (and a few others possibly) The gallery was expanded a bit, and got a second-hand larger Ross mixer from Anglia (then the old All Saints Road GVG possibly)

That building was always a problem as the BBC bit was too small (it actually got smaller when Close Up started as the TV edit moved into the radio station rather than being in a small space next door) When the sub-opt arrived the combined TV and Radio newsroom moved into a neighbouring building (also used by a Solicitors) but lease renewal was an issue, and so alternate newsroom space was found. AIUI the site is now being redeveloper (or is due to be) since Logica also moved out of the main building Radio Cambridgeshire was in?

If those are the 'old Cambridge studios' you were talking about - I don't think I'd read anything into them being empty.

When I was in Cambridge in March the building looked completely empty to me.

Yes it is indeed.

The old building was due to be demolished and rebuilt into new office space, but remains empty and untouched.

Parts of Cambridge are currently being redeveloped, including Newmarket Road so it will only be a matter of time before Hills Road gets the treatment.

BBC London were also at the South Essex Gymnastics Club in Basildon for a live at the same time.

Who has the "better" claim to Basildon - LDN or Look East?

Interesting how wanting to lay claim to Olympic/Paralympic athletes is one of the few things that'll make the Crystal Palace news programmes actually acknowledge the non-Greater London parts of their region for once!

I would say BBC London as they cover Southend.

Southend is a crossover area for BBC London and BBC East (E). Depending on where in the town you are, it's possible to get either a signal from Crystal Palace (along with most of SW Essex inc. Basildon) or from the low powered relay at Rouncefall which is a relay of BBC East (E) and ITV Anglia. Others in the town point their aerials at Bluebell Hill which SET doesn't cover Essex, but ITV Meridian does. Confusing!
