Also they tend to flicker up in N8 as seen about 3 mins 17 secs into this video

Pause that video at 3:32 and Zeinab has a halo! Wink

I guess its tricky to fade the lights on virtual sets (be it CSO or screens with a recorded or animated newsroom) without ruining the illusion.

M6 has a CSO* set but they manage to do it rather well:

*At least I think it is, how they get it to reflect off the floor escapes me.

Does anyone else miss the days when the lights went down at the end of the news? Here's a great example from ITN: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxBGKTZ43vk&t=5m37s

I do actually!

Glad I'm not the only one Very Happy It just seemed to be a natural end to the programme. As I recall it used to happen quite a lot, although never - to my knowledge - on daytime broadcasts. I remember it happening most on the early evening and late bulletins, especially on the ITN 540 News and BBC Nine O'Clock News. That particular clip I linked to before shows Martyn Lewis practically left in the dark! Laughing

Wonder who he's talking to, though? If I recall correctly, that studio rarely featured guests or other reporters as it was tiny.

I do like the fading lights concept, however. As you say, it's a natural ending.

Just before the part I specifically linked to, Jeremy Thompson is reading the sport, so I assume Martyn's talking to him. It seems to be a bank holiday bulletin, hence the inclusion of sport.

Watching it again - what fabulous music that 545 theme was. So catchy and unpredictable. Imagine if the BBC or ITN used such a theme nowadays Laughing

ah but the backdrop behind the newsreader was real in the blue virtual era!

They still managed some sort of a dim, didn't they? Although the lights shown onscreen in the wide shots weren't real.

Apologies for digging up an old thread, but I've happened across these behind the scene pictures which seem to suggest it isn't virtual at all. Confusing.
