I think CBS is really trying to provide value to their streaming services. They are doubling-down on streaming with CBS ALL ACCESS service. So Im sure if they saw value in using one of the digital subchannels for CBSN they would have done. I guess because CBSN is sorta of a runaway success, why break that mold on their streaming platform. They are really building out a suite of services on their streaming platform. Not sure what the long-term impact this is going to be, but its an interesting move.
I do like the grey, blue and black they use for the graphics. I think its a very clean and simple look. I hate to say it. I am usually the first person to hold up my hand and declare my hate for brick and stone on news sets. But I dont know why I like this whitewashed brick and the simple frosted panel behind the anchor desk with the OTS monitor and the black and white images of NYC.
Many wondered why they didnt just use the main set for the CBSNNY exclusive newscasts. I would imagine that the CBSNNY set is cheaper to run and its probably good to have a 2nd set if they need to continue rolling with breaking news if WCBS has to break away from network programming. They can continue to cover it. Just like the CBSN set, its very simple and cost effective, but its well lit. I do think the uplighting on the brick wall helps to add texture. And the simple white kneewall and frosted panels behind the presenter looks good I think.
It will be interesting to see if all the CBSN LOCAL channels will get a similar secondary set and graphics package.

WCBS launched something similar to this - CBS New York Plus - on digital subchannel 2.2 back in 2011, but it lasted less than three years.

New York has no shortage of 24-hour local news - NY1, News 12 and Fios1 depending on your area and TV provider - plus of course the trusty old WCBS and WINS on the radio. The only real change in the landscape that could make this second attempt more viable is the increase in smart TVs and similar.

To go back to page 1 and some early posts on this thread, the streaming only model seems to have secured them a younger audience demographic. By staying away from linear channels, I wonder if they are trying to trade off a higher number of viewers from all demos in favour of a lower number of more lucrative (for advertisers) younger viewers? Maybe?
Put simply, going linear might push up the average age of a viewer, which could make them seen by ad-buyers as just another TV news channel. Just a guess.

Not to get too into the weeds on this, but surely if it's provided as a streaming service, it can also be done over the air? It's a linear channel after all, and it seems silly not to have the highest level of viewership possible.

The viewership has skyrocketed for CBSN. And they already have advertisers heavily involved with their streaming services. So they have firmly planted their flag in the streaming world.

So clearly whatever they are pulling in has made the channel profitable. There hasnt been a huge outlay int he simply way the channel is formatted and set up. CBS is not known for wasting money.

The powers that be at CBS TV stations and CBS News digital want to capitalize on strong streaming numbers.

If that desk seems familiar, it is because that desk was used for the 2011-2016 WCBS set as the news desk for WLNY newscasts until the 2016 set change

Not only that, CBSN's success has also led creating a streaming service for sports news and highlights in CBS Sports HQ as well. With the streaming services, CBS doesn't have to worry about retransmission fees for the two.
