Gavin Grey is a great presenter, but I wish after the sting on the :30 he would say 'Good evening, welcome back to BBC News with me Gavin Grey' or something like that, rather than just straight into 'The headlines this hour'. The same goes with the TOTH after the sting, he goes straight into the first story without a welcome. It just doesn't sound 'right'.

Isn't that a characteristic of World news presenters in general? They can't say good morning, afternoon, or evening on World, so they have to be generic as possible - either by having no intro (something I seem to remember was quite common in the 70s and earlier), or by saying something like a simple "Welcome." - and by omitting any mention to the channel, it prevents any channel cock-ups.

That's true, but Gavin Grey was presenting a shift on the news channel when Worzel posted this, where the presenters can be a bit more relaxed at the TOTH/BOTH, not on World.

I know that, but you'd expect that the habits you learn on World News will carry over to the News Channel.

But surely if that's the case you'd expect the same from Tim Willcox, Chris Rogers and Adam Parsons, who are relief presenters on both World News and the News Channel but are always very welcoming whenever they appear on the NC!

And has Gavin Grey ever really done many shifts on World News? I know he's done the odd few but I thought he was mainly just occasional cover for the News Channel.

I'm not a rota fanatic, so I don't know - but I presumed he was more likely to present on World than the News Channel.

The three names you mention - especially Tim Willcox - are on the News Channel enough to be able to switch modes, as it were - presenters who are mainly on World News may find it easier not to bother.

Yes he was better today than his first outing a little while ago. A bit more comfortable and relaxed, but he is still quite serious.

Gavin Grey has only done a couple of shifts on World.

Yes, you're right. However, Martine Dennis always says "Good Morning" when she does the Friday morning slot on world. Just something I've noticed.

Chris Rogers has just given us a rather warm welcome to World News. Not exactly cold.

I've noticed that as well. Maybe they made their policy less strict. I mean they are even allowed to have a good laugh these days. Laughing

Especially Martine! She seems to laugh quite a lot, not that I'm complaining as its funny to watch as well.

I've actually got the last few minutes of a weekend bulletin on VHS from 1985 presented by Jan Leeming with Mark Austin on sport. It's amazing how wooden he is!

Sorry to hark back to a discussion in July, but I just want to let everyone know I've finally got round to uploading this video of Mark Austin and Jan Leeming:

Chris Rogers was on again yesterday. It seems very weird how Chris Eakin has randomly disappeared. Maybe he has quietly left BBC News like Rachel Schofield has recently?
