Not sure but today's set up (lunch and early evening same presenter, late a senior presenter) was similar to the set up they had at the weekends during the 1990s and early 2000s. I think I'm right in saying the likes of Moira Stuart or Chris Lowe would do the lunch and teatime before someone more 'senior' (but just as good) such as Sissons or Buerk would come in to do the late. At some point this changed so the same presenter would do all 3 bulletins, until it became standard for the duty News Channel presenter to do the lunchtime summary.

I recall Peter Sissons after moving to News 24 always used to do the evening news on a Saturday. I’m not sure whether that was separate or apart of that period as I was quite a bit younger the time.

Peter occasionally did the weekend news after moving to News 24 but I don't think it was a regular thing. Darren Jordon was the main face on Saturday and Sunday evening's for quite a long period of time.

When Huw and Fiona took over the Ten O'Clock News, the Sunday late bulletin was Ten O'Clock News branded and Fiona used to be the regular presenter. (The Saturday bulletin wasn't Ten branded)

From memory Huw usually did Mon-Thu, and Fiona did Fri and Sun.

And now the Six and Ten is the only bulletin with (some) continuity in presenters. Wouldn’t it be 10x easier to tidy up some slots and assign people permanently? Huw and George only do three days now so without starting fantasy rota forum I cannot see why at the moment has been the only time for many years where we’ve gotten pretty much the same presenter at the same time each week.

Does it really matter? The vast majority of viewers don’t care who’s on the Six, as long as it’s one of the 5 presenters who they, by now, recognize.

The fact that Jane Hill and Simon McCoy alternate Wednesdays on the One (I think someone mentioned this a few pages back) doesn’t really matter a jot to the viewer, most of whom won’t even realize.

If we had thirty different presenters of the Ten in a month, I could see the point of some people complaining.

But we don’t. There’s only 5 people (+/-) in the Ten pool and they’re now reasonably well known.

For the ‘appointment to view’ regular viewer, starting on the dot at 1, 6 and 10 is probably more important than who’s reading it.

And, as they’ve turned down my application for BBC News, nobody else should get the chance......

It’s not a massive deal but when so many cuts are being made there seem to be a good chunk people rotating between bulletins.

Just realised Clive presented the early evening bulletin tonight (or this morning whenever). When was the last time there were different presenters at the weekend? (not including New Years Day 2020 in this as it was technically a weekday)

Yes, I remember back in the 90s one newsreader, e.g. Moira Stuart, Chris Lowe, Jennie Bond et al, would present the breakfast, lunch and early evening bulletins. Another newsreader, usually Peter Sissons or Michael Buerk, would present the late news. That practice continued probably until about 2000, after which one newsreader would present the lunch, early evening and late weekend bulletins. The breakfast summary had been dropped and was eventually replaced by Breakfast. Peter Sissons continued as a regular weekend presenter, eventually doing the lunch and early evening bulletins as well as the late, well into the china red and cream era. Other regular weekend presenters around this time were George Alagiah, Sian Williams, Fiona Bruce and eventually Matthew Amroliwala and Darren Jordon. Once Peter Sissons moved to News 24 he didn't crop up on BBC1 too much after that. He did an occasional Ten or weekend, but very, very sparingly.

The 1999 relaunch saw George and Fiona designated as the Teatime bulletin presenters according to a report at the time. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/237946.stm

I think around this time, Michael Buerk stopped appearing at weekends and at this point more faces started appearing, such as Sian Williams, Darren Jordan and Matthew Amroliwala being the main ones I remember, but there were probably more. Nick Witchell still made occasional appearances at the weekend as well, although I think he'd given up being 3rd choice for the weekday 9/10 at this point to George.

As said, from 2003 Darren and Fiona were the main weekend faces, with the usual News 24 presenters providing cover when needed. I'm not sure when Fiona stopped doing weekends, but I remember when Darren left BBC in 2006, the weekend rota went out of the window.

That arrangement usually only applied on Saturdays. On a Sunday Moira Stuart would read the news in Breakfast with Frost/Sunday AM and in the Politics Show at lunchtime

Only 5?
In the past year the 6 has seen George, Huw, Sophie, Fiona, Reeta, Clive, Mishal, Tina, Simon and possibly Jane and Ben present on weekdays.

Well to be fair on a normal week you would only see George, Huw, Sophie and Fiona doing the Six & Ten, with Reeta and Clive primarily at weekends but covering weekdays when needed. The others you mentioned seldom present in the evenings during the week, and have only really appeared during holiday periods. And Jane, Ben & Simon mainly do the One.

Before we had COVID I think I would add Clive to one of the main ones presenting most Fridays and generally covering the Ten more often than others.

Interesting quote at the end of that article regarding Martyn Lewis:
Quote:
Lewis has been asked to take a prominent role presenting BBC World and to discuss other opportunities with BBC News.

I'm guessing this never came to anything?
