Some interesting findings and stats on the News channel and Partliament.

Very interesting, was noticeable that BBC News now has a lead in terms of reach over Sky News even in Sky households. Also the plans to remove regular business updates, and to remove the requirement to co-present for major international breaking news, will both go ahead. And confirmed that with all the major news stories of the past year, audiences for rolling news increased.

Most viewers felt that the BBC News Channel fulfils its commitments to international news coverage well, with many referring to the range of resources and foreign correspondents that allow it to provide breadth and depth of international coverage. However, many respondents to the consultation would like to see more global news covering a greater range of issues and countries from around the world, particularly with less emphasis on the USA and more coverage devoted to European news.

This is in some respects related to the BBC News Channel’s coverage of European politics, which should aim to explain EU institutions and their work through live coverage and reporting by specialist correspondents. Again, while some believe that this is something that the BBC News Channel does well, others would like to see more European reporting.

Excellent stuff.

No surprise there. When I spent some time in London recently (a truly wonderful city!), I had to remind myself that I was in a European country -- let alone a fully fledged EU member -- and not somewhere near Australia when I was watching the news.

Far more Britons now work, live, vacation, retire, invest in or buy property in other European countries than at any other time in history. Thousands if not millions of others have jobs that depend on what happens elsewhere in the EU. Yet, one wouldn't guess this from watching the UK's domestic news services. This attitude extends even to weather forecasts, which don't include a single weather map showing the rest of Europe. (Unlike weather forecasts in every other European country I know.)

My father was amazed to hear that the BBC has a "Europe correspondent" -- and I agree: That's a bit like NBC having a "North America correspondent"!

Isn't it reflective of the whole "we're in Europe but not of Europe" thing? Silly little island nations get to feel that way sometimes.

Some quite extrordinary conclusions drawn,

Consultation results...
"many respondents to the consultation would like to see more global news covering a greater
range of issues and countries from around the world, particularly with less emphasis on
the USA and more coverage devoted to European news.

Conclusion...

"The Trust has not found compelling evidence that the current approach to international
news needs to be changed."

Perhaps they should read their own report!
