If Kirsty Young were to do it I'd put her in the "there on merit" category.

BBC News could definately do with another star name alongside Huw Edwards, Huw Edwards and Huw Edwards.

But they do have a number of main presenters, Sophie Raworth and Fiona Bruce are senior news presenters and have frequently handled breaking news and presented major news programmes. Sophie was on for hours when Prince George was born. As mentioned, George Alagiah is also well established, popular and hugely proficient.

Trouble is though Sophie hasn't really shown she is capable of much more than royal fluff while Fiona is now much more associated with Antiques Roadshow than BBC News. George Alagiah is brilliant and his absence is being felt at the moment.

I associate Fiona with BBC News, I see her there loads more than Antiques Roadshow, and regardless of what else she does, the fact is she is a senior BBC news presenter and has the skills and experience required. I can't see how she's any less credible or proficient than Mary Nightingale, for example.

And Sophie may be better at the Royal business than politics, but they've got an anchor who specialises in politics in Huw Edwards. The point is to have anchors who all have different specialist subjects, like how ITV have Alastair Stewart who does more of the big politics stories and Mark Austin who does foreign affairs. And again, you don't hang around on national BBC News for twenty years if you're not capable of covering all kinds of stories. I don't associate George Alagiah with politics much and I doubt he'd have the knowledge Huw has to cover an entire election programme, but he has obvious experience in other fields like foreign reporting and knows enough about politics to be able to talk about it knowledgably when required.

The point is Huw, Fiona, George and Sophie all have subjects they're more interested in but all have the broad knowledge to be able to deal with everything the news throws at them. In addition they are all hugely popular with the audience and well known, more so than the ITV presenters I would suggest. They are "star names".

The difference with Fiona is she has always been Huw's stand in rather than having a role of her own.

First time that Panorama has been live for a very long time! I don't think there was a live Panorama in 2010? Was there a live edition during the riots in 2011? I know there was a live Tonight programme on ITV.

Slightly random question, but is Kate Silverton now gone for good?

No, she is a regular presenter of the Six O'Clock News and Ten O'Clock News.

She's a regular stand in for Andrew Marr, which is as quite some way away from fluff.

Dunno. Good question. Maternity leave again?

In the upcoming 2016/17 referendum, who will be the main presenter? And will the presenters/studio be largely the same? Ie- Vine, Maitlis & Co…?

I could see that coming from NBH, I think something like the way they did local elections from N9 would be perfectly adequate.
