Corporate-ish and stylish. (November 2009)

I was thinking about some ideas for ITV Nightscreen, which do help it to make more 'corporate' and stylish.

Arrow This screen is seen between blocks of pages. Please note: there are two things whose stay on-screen all the time - new DOG and strap which does show the genre of pages viewing and the next block's name.

Arrow All programmes' pages would have layout similar to this: name put above the 'yellow reflection line', times, channel logos, description, picture and availability on ITV Player (with a bit of idea...)

Arrow The listings. Simply self-explanatory.

For me, it seems to be a little dire (or outdated?), but you judge!

The font size for the listings would be too small if watching on a SD television, maybe you'd get away with it with a HD television.

I don't get the concept of Nightscreen. Your EPG should be able to tell you what programmes are coming up in the next 7 days, but if not (only now & next) most newspapers coming with a listings section, or you could just buy a TV listings magazine.

If I wanted to know more information about the programme, the above applies as well.

Well, it's still here, so we need to cope with it. However, I can understand what you're talking about.

Anyway, what are opinions regarding this mock?

Much like Pages from Ceefax, Nightscreen plugs a gap in the early morning where scheduling 'real' programmes would be pointless. I think Ofcom has just given the go ahead for terrestrials to show Teleshopping overnight so I doubt that it will be around for much longer.

Anyway, the mock. A good attempt at bringing the service into line with the current ITV1 branding.

A few issues: The 'N' is too close to the ITV rectangle. The reflection isn't realistic as the tagline is placed over it which ruins the effect. As previously mentioned, the text in the final image would be too small, perhaps try two separate slides for Daytime and Primetime?

The second image is more or less spot on - although there might be slightly too much text.

Really like these, well done.

A few things I would change...
The first image, as you said, would appear between block of pages. I would lose that long yellow bar at the top saying "Primetime follows shortly" and instead, just put PRIMETIME under "your guide" I would also have it with slightly different backgrounds depending on the time of day. So for Daytime, I would have a lighter background, and for Primetime keep the black. (Not so sure how this would look though, so it might not work)

With the second picture, again I would lose the yellow bar at the top. then on the right side, mirroring the ITV Nightscreen logo, I would just have the text 'PRIMETIME' (or DAYTIME etc)

With the third picture (the full day guide), I would split it with Daytime and Primetime being separate (like Jonny has said) and make the text bigger.

Overall though, great job and looks very modern.

1 - Not enough space between 'Nightscreen' and the yellow bits of the logo. The gap should be 1.5 x the with of the gap between the 'V' in 'ITV' and the edge of the box.

2 - 'Primetime follows shortly' doesn't really make enough sense even in the context esepcially when you have 'Morning news follows shortly' on one of the others.

2 - Reflections are a bit naff now.

3 - 'Your guide thorugh ITV' doesn't sound right.

4 - Line spacing in the prgoramme blurb coyld be increased to make it easier to read.

5 - The 24 hour clock times are a bit OTT. I think if you ordered the schedule by say morning, afternoon, evening, primetime and late evening it would look better.

Tried to do some tweaks...

Arrow The lettering doesn't clash with ITV rectangle, tagline and strap gone (in favour of a simple text), reflection changed.

Arrow Not much tweak. Spacing made larger, as well as some orange added on the image.

Arrow The main idea is to make lettering larger, as well as showing programmes in a 'river'/'continuity' style.

For me, some parts (such as schedule) seem to be lame, but you judge.

Yes the changes you have made are better. I still think with the first image, the main screen, Primetime (or Morning etc) should be made bigger and put about 2 inches or so under the ITV Nightscreen logo, but on the other pages keep it at the top.

I think the schedule page looks fine apart from everything seems to be squashed in the top. The ITV1 logo needs moving down a bit, then the list of programs needs to be moved down a bit further away from the ITV1 logo. Not sure if the mixed pics work well or not, but its very different.

To me it needs some colour and animation. It would be a step backwards if it was just black in the background and static screens. They want you to keep watching not to send you to sleep.

But the ideas there it just needs tweaking a bit more.
