This mock started as a simple "I wonder how Reith might be implemented" playing around with still images in a graphics application. I started by looking at the current logo and simply replacing the Gill Sans “NEWS” with a Reith one, it looked ok, but I’ve personally never like the boxes BBC News logo, and now that its not the standard for the channel logos I dropped it in favour of a rectangular logo similar to 1999 era logos.
Here are all of my designs in chronological order as I was playing around, including inadvertently creating a very similar logo to that of Sky News, oops. Amazing what the subconscious can do.
This then evolved into more of a "What would a larger refresh, but not a rebrand" look like. Knowing that budgets are tight and there wouldn't be funds for an entire new set or repainting of the newsroom I worked on a purely graphical rebrand with the logic that the sets and newsroom would remain unchanged.
With that in mind I decided that the core elements of the current news brand would need to remain, the hoops, cat’s cradle etc. I used these elements but incorporated new and reused ones such as the radio wave rings and circular animations and clocks from previous eras to end up with that I think is a brighter, fresher look for BBC News that wouldn't feel to dissimilar from what the public already knows as the BBC News brand.
Starting simply, with the logo I’d created as the DOG. The red position animates very slowly and subtly over 60 seconds, just a hint of movement but nothing overly distracting or “trashy.” The BBC portion lies outside the standard 16:9 sage areas, which whilst these can be ignored more and more these days I wanted the core graphics to remain 16:9 safe, not only for legibility but I find them visually more appealing.
A simple single line strap, in this instance from the headline sequence. You see how I’ve used the separator from the logo as a visual link to the strap, this also forms part of its on screen animation wiping up then left and the reverse when coming off screen.
It was at this stage when I started playing around in After Effects making a headline wipe, this was the result, as this would only be on screen for seconds during the wipe its animation is much quicker than would be used elsewhere, and I tried to keep it visually rich, but found adding too much made it distracting, here the “clock dials” and globe are missing, I may re-add the globe at a later stage.
An example of a two-line strap, for the most part the style of these closely resembles what’s current just with the newer background not going to the extreme right and the use of Reith. For the most part I wanted to stick with a single font width and just change the case for empathises. All of these graphics use Reith Sans Medium and Bold in some places
This was one I enjoyed making, the boxes background, almost identical to the wipe this animated much slower and more subtly, but is quicker than the current style one. I made a point of keeping the inset video positioning and location identifiers in the same locations as the current one, meaning at implementation it would be just the video layer and font that would need changes.
This isn’t something I think I would use, this is simply the logo with the high detail background I didn’t use for the wipes. I’ve not made titles yet, but this allowed me to play with adding many elements and adding more and more detail and richness to it.
Oh, and did I mention this is all After Effects? Yes, it all moves too! Here’s the headlines and some lower third animations including the ticker. I hope to produce a full sequence with titles, stings and opts and a full set of graphics but I thought I’d share where I’m up to so far.
Finally, some of this was streamed live whilst being made, if you’re interested in seeing me make the titles and help with ideas let me know and I’ll plan a day/time where you can tune in for the rest. twitch.tv/lazyorange
