I don't think UKTV did themselves any favours with the restrictions placed on their content. Like ITV, I suspect they wanted more from TVPlayer in carriage fees.
The other reason may be that UKTV (or what is left of it) may be ready to relaunch UKTV Player as a paid service with live streams of the premium channels.
I see they've finally launched Chromecast support, only behind the paywall though.

As suspected, UKTV Player have now added the live streams of the Freeview channels, including those which have been sold to Discovery on the desktop version, which were previously on TVPlayer.
TVPlayer still have contracts with Viacom, A+E Networks and Discovery, however if Viacom was also to leave, that'd leave them with most of their pay tv entertainment gone.
