That news bulletin looks like the type of thing you'd expect from an early 80s strike edition of Thames News or something.
At least that means cwilliams1976 is finally getting employment

Apparently there are some good things on the channel, friends have seen them, but because they don't have any continuity, or ever update their EPG (it's
always
wrong), they can't tell you what they are so you have a chance to see them again. That, and the only good things seem to be followed by something even more awful than their normal coverage, nobody I know has managed to sit through more than about 15 minutes.
My housemates have commented that the adverts are one of the best features of the channel, mainly because they've been produced. Sitting watching their programming, you're left hoping there's an advert break just around the corner.
I'm quite happy to say I've never been a fan of this local TV idea, but when I heard Sheffield Live had got my local licence, and knowing a fair bit about them, I wasn't expecting anything good. But this is even worse than I expected. It's embarrassing to watch, and I feel sorry for the people on the frontlines. Sheffield Live make a big thing about many of their staff being volunteers, and giving them industry standard training to be able to do their broadcasts, but having had to met several of their DJ graduates I get the feeling any of these new volunteers who try to use their new skills in the real world of TV may find they've been shortchanged.
Even better, their "studio" is a couple of floors above two of Hallam University's production studios (which while I don't believe are currently equipped for multi-camera production, one of them is a full green screen VR space).
I particularly enjoyed the filler clips for the first 2 minutes of the What's On Sheffield clip - I've truly no idea what the pictures are of or what they are meant to represent. And the sound is excruciating, which obviously tempts people to leave the channel on.
Surely that's up there as the worst 90 seconds of television ever produced. Sounds from a torture chamber alongside images of Sheffields red light district hotspots. (or so it appears)
Regarding Sheffield Live News.....um ok wow. It makes me sad. How did this make it to air? I'm not going to be too harsh, but its quite bad and as some have stated its actually embarrassing. I dont know where to begin. All of it is just wrong. I feel bad for Sheffield. A city of almost 600,000. Wow.
Not sure of the bidders for Sheffield license, I imagine Sheffield Live was the only one. Its seems like there werent any minimum standards for broadcast quality. Its like they just set up a camera and grabbed some student to do they news. MustardTV and NottsTv News by comparison have far better production values relative in the UK local tv sphere.
This is just bad. IMO This damages the idea for local tv in the UK, because its so bad. Shockingly bad.
Is it me or does the fire story repeat 12 minutes in? It's absolutely dire. The background isn't even nice.
"If you're interested in the weather stash tuned for our weather report."
The stories don't even come across well.
They even let the side down in their reports/interviews, the cutaways have clearly not been used with a tripod as they are shaky and in the furniture store fire the shot is out of focus.

The fire story is mentioned twice, as are all the other stories in the main bulletin. You get the really long extend headline, followed by weather, then you go through the running order again with videos this time.
"If you're interested in the weather stash tuned for our weather report."
Almost as bad as using "and finally" to start the introduction of a dull piece about a university project, which isn't even the last item in the programme.

Not in focus is a pretty standard feature. They seem to love getting the background pin sharp, but foreground blurry. Likewise on outdoor reports, you can often hear background noises louder than their interviewee, so last night was actually pretty good technically. At least they didn't have the problem they had the other day where they'd got the interlacing mixed up on every report. It made the reports virtually unwatchable.
I don't have a chance to see this on broadcast TV. You mention interlacing problems, so are they actually using traditional ENG camcorders? A lot of these stations have been using Digital SLRs as far as i've seen. Call me a weirdo, but i've always preferred the interlaced look for TV news, as it makes it feel more real life. When they use DIgital SLRs they often use the standard lens which is rather wide angle, and has a shallower depth of field than most ENG cameras, so the shot just doesn't look right to me, and of course it's a progressive image.
