Perhaps they're preparing 1-5 to become like Sky Sports F1, with different genres, like Rugby and Premier League?

That is possible. They've experimented with that recently with Sky Sports 2 becoming the main cricket channel (even renamed 'Sky Sports Ashes' when they're on) and Sky Sports 4 becoming the main golf channel.

I'm surprised they didn't go for Sky Sports Football with SS5 considering that is all it's supposed to be, although looking at the first week "News HQ" gets a nightly airing at 6pm and they have simulcasts of SSNHQHD at breakfast and some lunchtimes, along with Soccer Saturday. For the record SS5 kicks off with the UEFA Super Cup which for some reason is on a Tuesday (isn't it usually a Friday?), and also features live Scottish football.

I guess as we've seen with Sky Sports F1 the problem is with most sports they're concentrated around the weekend, so that does leave an awful lot of filler required during the week.

They've revamped it. Used to be in Monaco, now it's in the glamorous... Cardiff.

SS3 gets most if not all tennis coverage. The problem is, where do you put all of the other stuff that you can't fill a whole channel with?

And of course, "Sky Sports Football" wouldn't make sense since the most popular football is on 1, and "Sky Sports European Football" is too long winded.

Sky Movies have successfully made the change to genre-based names but the situation with sports is completely different.

I suppose you could have Sky Sports Live, Sky Sports Europe, Sky Sports America, Sky Sports Football etc etc

The problem with the genre based names is that it creates an expectation that the channel will be, if not exclusively, then primarily composed of events of that sport.

Take Sky Sports F1 - it lies idle between December and March while other sports are getting moved to the red button because they can't be moved to Sky Sports F1 because of the expectation that the channel will show, if not exclusively F1, certainly motorsport related programming.

You end up having to run more channels in the end and having them idle far more often. There'd also certainly be a need for at least one "generic" channel to cover stuff like tennis, GAA, professional wrestling, and the like that Sky have rights for but couldn't justify a channel of their own.

Sky Sports Premier, Sky Sports SportMax and Sky Sports The Sports Channel all presumably mooted under the new naming strategy.

Still confuses me how they carried on with both Sky Movies and The Movie Channel for so long.

Yes, it's now going to flit around a different city every year like the Europa League and Champions League Finals (but not as good). It used to be on the last Friday in August alongside the European draws but nobody liked that because it meant the participants had to miss a league fixture (in addition to the Champions League winner also missing another one in December to be in the World Club Championships). So they've now moved it forwards a couple of weeks, helped by the fact they're no longer playing internationals in August.

After the Sky/BSB merger there might have been contractual reasons as to why The Movie Channel name had been kept, or maybe they weren't that keen on Sky Movies 2, I guess there had to be some continuity for BSB viewers, as all the BSB names and channels had effetively been scrapped to some extent.

Although I'm quite amazed that as late as 1997 that the The Movie Channel was still a name they were using. You get the feeling that the 1997 egg branding at Sky was meant to last into the Digital era, but they dropped that pretty quick, especially when it came to Sky Movies, having Sky Movies Screen 3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and Widescreen was probably going to happen if they didn't revamp the channels to Premier, Moviemax and Cinema.
