HTV: did the yellow ident hit the bucket in Nover 1999? Granada never bough the station until 2000.

Yes, it did. The purple hearts idents were an ITV Network thing, not necessarily a Granada one. All three UNM regions (HTV, Anglia, Meridian) adopted them, as did Border, Channel and the GMG regions (Granada, Yorkshire, Tyne Tees, LWT). This was Monday 8th November for all of them, except LWT which was Friday 12th November.

Although TV Ark suggests that Meridian (and so, probably Anglia & HTV too) retained their existing ident for occassional regional programme junctions, I've seen no evidence of that. Looking at regional news titles from these regions of the time, any preceding ident shown is the hearts ones. Also, I could get HTV Wales reception, albeit rubbish quality, from my parents house and recall HTV using just the hearts idents at every junction around 2000 time. Furthermore, the pre-form up film sequences were only used occassionally (whereas GMG North were using them on most junctions in the early hearts era) and when used, the music was always the strings version and not the piano varient that GMG North used for certain variations (i.e. the washing line one). Most HTV Wales junctions, however, seemed to just use the plain lines form-up ident.

I don't recall Meridian using their regional ident alongside the hearts. They were still using the yellow endcap though until the Granada endcaps came into use.

I think there is always confusion here, as all UMN regions stopped using their old idents once the heart idents came in. It's probably due to the fact that there was a generic hearts presentation package introduced a few months prior to the idents which was adopted by all UNM regions.

Yes, GMG regions and Border also introduced those in October 1998, about 11 months before the hearts. The GMG regions and Border also used the hearts breakbumper from October 1998, whereas the UNM regions kept their regional ones until the hearts idents arrived, when they edited regional versions. Carlton, Central & Westcountry didn't initially use any of the hearts package till Carlton brought the star idents in for all the regions in September 1999, when they started using the hearts trailers and breakbumper. Personally, I'm surprised they didn't go for special Carlton ones, considering how different the idents were. Not sure what Channel were doing at the time and it's hard to find continuity on Youtube, especially as 'Channel TV' aren't good search words, but Scottish, Grampian and UTV never implemented any of the hearts look.

We should be able to get a date, since of course Grampain had to change the ident on the same day that new package come in either Monday 5th October or Wedenday 7th

Couldn't tell you when it was first introduced, but the thicker, electronically generated version of that ident arrived in Autumn 1984, also when IVC had its green screen background introduced.

I believe April 1990, it was disused locally by October 1991, if not before that.

Monday 2nd January 1995, 9.25am, I remember it debuting.

The goldfish, steam train, and ice/peel idents were introduced in September 1996, the rest were gradually added between then and 1998.

Thanks for that. Did the 1995 ident stop appearing after Sept 96 or was mixed in?

It was mixed in and used less, although 95 was used more frequently and without sound during it's last year, ie when continuity was switched to Yorkshire. Granada were known for changing their promos etc quite frequently during this period, even in the first couple of months of the 95 look the font had changed....

There was a second variation of the 95 ident where the G appeared at an angle. It didn't last long and possibly was made redundant when the fun idents came in.

As has been said, the standard ident continued but was seen less often, usually before news, serious programmes or those that required a warning regarding the content. When transmission moved to Leeds, all the idents in current use made the journey over the Pennines. However, as was typical of YTV, they got lazy and used the normal striped one more and more. In some ways, I feel the move to Leeds would've been an appropriate time to give Granada a new ident that better suited YTV's style but I suppose they wanted as few people to notice any change as possible.
