Are any of the RSL's that are operating providing an alternative to ITV?
Sadly most if not all RSLs are very low-budget and don't have the reach or the viewership to attract enough advertising to fund anything more than the occasional studio discussion and simulcasts of either Sky News or ITN News Channel - and why should they - when they are allgoing to lose their licenses after just a few years, with no hope of renewal as they are being removed to make way fro DTT.

I suspect the reason itv1 has deteriorated in recent years is down to Carlton and Granada who WASTED money through itv digital. Now they have some *major* problems with their flagship channel, itv1, not to mention the state itv digital is in, it's hard to see how it can all recover (it probably never will). Yes, they need to polish up on presentation / branding, and continuity (again pointing finger at GMG), but that alone will not rescue itv1. Neither will getting away from the itv1 name and becoming more 'regional' presentation-wise. When I think of what I actually watch on itv1, well I don't have to think hard.... just Coronation Street and that is getting crap. On the other hand, I don't watch a single thing on ANY of the BBC channel either! Infact, I watch more Channel 4 than anything else.
I think you demonstrate just how crap TV really is these days. What is behind TV these days is execs in suits, corporate meetings on how to cut costs and increase profits etc, and shareholders. Is it any wonder TV has gone the way it has. I hate to say this on a TV forum, but I find TV is getting really really boring. I'd sooner go out to the 'movies' with my girlfriend any day - the good old fashioned way, right!!!
Anyway back on topic, I watched UTV NEWS the other night. It was very serious with Postal strikes and that schoolboy who got killed, I thought this was probably more important to NI viewers than the ITV News AT Ten which someone else has also said!
Maybe the generic look will hopefully fall apart soonhttp://web.ukonline.co.uk/tv.home/forum/emoticons/cheesy.gif

Still the case in UTV-land - no Irish newspaper or listings magazine refers to 'ITV1' (or even 'ITV'), only 'UTV'. Only the Oirish Sun and Mirror and the NI editions of Radio Times and TV Times call it 'ITV1 Ulster'. (The name Ulster hasn't even been used on-screen for eight years, and even when it was called that people still called it UTV. Although I did hear a journalist on the radio here call it Independent Television today!!!)
Curiously, the TV reviews in The [Glasgow] Herald refer to ITV1, although the listings - on the same page - have Scottish TV.
What's more, SMG own The Herald.
(It makes me think that Davild Belcher doesn't actually write his own reviews and they just use a syndicated column)
