Well, what a line-up we had on UTV Live at Six this evening. Rose Neill and Tina Campbell at the newsdesk, and Pamela Ballantine on sport. A hark back to the good old days. Smile

EDIT 19:35 . . . and meanwhile now, on BBC2 NI, its Noel Thompson v Mike Nesbitt on Hearts and Minds. Makes for interesting viewing, especially when Thompson pushes Nesbitt on an aspect of UUP policy which Nesbitt stated to the programme's researches and producers that he would not discuss.

Mike Nesbitt's hasn't lost any of his journalist skills, I see!

Well this evening saw Tim McGarry charge Noel Thompson that £12.50 fare for the very last time, with the final edition of Hearts and Minds.

I read in the Belfast Telegraph yesterday that Noel Thompson will shortly begin a stint on Good Morning Ulster on the wireless, so perhaps Mark Carruthers will be appearing more regularly again on Newsline, as well as anchoring the new political output in the autumn. Seems that the speculation a few months back that Noel would be moved away from television may be coming to fruition.

Shame. I'll miss that Hearts and Minds theme tune, Mr Thompson's inquisitive interviewing, and Tim McGarry's often hilarious reflections on the week's events.

it appears Newsline came on air a bit earlier than usual this lunchtime, with live coverage of the Queen's visit to Enniskillen.

And BBC Newsline is live now at present on BBC Two NI.

I'm very impressed by both BBC and UTV's coverage of the Queen's visit which I've seen so far - especially the jib shots of Enniskillen town centre.

There was also a Clarky special on UTV about The Queen's previous state visits to NI and last year's jaunt to the Republic - wasn't badly put together, I thought, and suitably rational commentary from "across the divide", as it were.

Heads-up: Sarah Clarke is back from maternity leave on UTV Live tonight. In case anyone's missed our favourite Star-Wars-character-a-like Norn Iron newsreader.

What next for Tina Campbell, then?

EDIT: As confirmed by a senior member of BBC NI staff on Twitter this evening, This is Noel Thompson's final week presenting BBC Newsline before he takes up presenting Good Morning Ulster next month. Tonight was his final programme with long-standing co-anchor Donna Traynor.

A true loss to regional TV news; best of luck on the early shifts, Noel.

In the meantime, a tribute VT has just appeared on BBC Newsline's Facebook page for those who missed it: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=316209541808883

Yes, just noticed this at http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-19165290

I'm raging I missed the programme tonight! Indeed it is a great loss to local television. For so many years, the news department at BBC Northern Ireland hasn't been a typical regional news department. I think it was Sean Rafferty who described Northern Ireland news as being 'proper news' as opposed to the rather more 'fluffy' nature of some of the other nations and regions. And for so many years, it was Noel who was the anchor who delivered all the bad news of the day. Plus, in more recent years, the better news. I grew up watching him every evening. It won't be the same without him.

Very understated exit. Seems BBC NI wanted to keep this one reasonably quiet. Can't help feeling that Noel deserved a better send-off than this - at least having a co-presenter this evening would have helped.
