Just before Blockbusters the Challenge CA said "Now we remember Bob Holness, who sadly passed away today. Our thoughts are with his family and friends". They didn't play a snippet of Baker Street as a tribute.

Did they just acknowledge with an announcement or did they do a still caption as well? ISTR Challenge showing a still caption before episodes of 321 when Ted Rogers died.

They said it over the fruit machine ident (with sound) and then the same voice was played over the falling pink building blocks ident before the second episode. I'm not sure if it was the same woman as normally does the voice over or not. It could have been the same woman doing her sombre voice.
I thought it was slightly odd to mention his family. I doubt anyone at Challenge knew his family.
This is sad news. I'm sure he'll endure in the memory as the face of Blockbusters. Despite the show itself continuing beyond Bob's tenure as presenter, if one is asked to name something associated with Blockbusters, he is one of the first names that comes to mind, if not the first - an indication of just how much he defined the show and left a lasting imprint.
I was not a die-hard Blockbusters fan during the original run, I caught episodes here and there, but then I remember seeing the BBC2 version in the mid-90s and noting how it just seemed wrong without Bob at the helm - too, I wonder how it must be as a presenter of any later Blockbusters incarnation to step into such shoes.
On occasion in the late 90s / early 00s, I watched Call My Bluff and thought he was a great choice for the host, well-suited the the programme. His presenting style in general came across as professional yet never too overstated, very much how it should be.
Out of interest, why did Blockbusters end on Itv in the 1990s?
I think Blockbusters, like Bullseye is one those shows which will only ever really work with the original host, both those shows are actually not that interesting, but the quirkiness and charm of those presenters made that show somehow watchable - I'm sad to say I think the revived series will be a duffer.

Yup, it was definitely Bob that made it unique. Some people say what was unique about it was the fact it had teenagers on it. But the BBC version did too and that just didn't have the charm the original did. I'm fairly confident in saying it was Bob that made that show special.
Well, I imagine many TVF members are "all wearing black" today. Certainly a lot of YouTubers
I suppose he was last heard from back in 2007 when he was interviewed for Gameshow Marathon and the v/o he did for Blockbusters on wedigtv.com - a genius idea where you could be a contestant playing a virtual version of the gameshows. Although I think he was also in the audience for 'An Audience without Jeremy Beadle' in 2008 but I could be wrong.
Nevertheless, perhaps we'll see some repeats of his Call My Bluff era one day... probably in 20 years time on Challenge or whatever it will be then.
The South East Today report in the video window features a video lifted from TV Ark - the one of Bob saying goodbye after the final episode of Blockbusters.
FYI that video from the Proms is actually faked, the've never played it at the Proms - I believe it's the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Stanley Black performing the theme.
I think the DM has just being stupid with this Quote
Quote:
He was ‘flabbergasted’ when Carlton TV decided to drop the show and failed to find anything to match it in popularity or the following it created.
Especial since Carlton NEVER took full control of Central until 1994, and BB was axed in 1992, look at the end cap date of the last ITV episodes, ITV axed it because there was such a bad back log thanks to no proper slots for the series, thanks Home and away!
Saying that half the paper are even thick for not releasing that he did 11 years of blockbusters 83 - 94.,
