Of course, it's not actually fair to say that Tyne Tees "couldn't afford" through the night TV. They were vehemently against it, as I've mentioned before. Ready to pull the plug on a couple of occasions, they never saw the point and were finally bounced into accepting Granada's service in 1988 after initially stating in the Northern Echo that they had no intention of introducing such a service.

Shame really, because knowing City Road they would have probably just introduced a black or dark blue IVC backdrop and interspersed the usual imported crap with five minute in-vision blocks. Which of course would have been a pres fan's dream outcome.

I have to agree with you there, If have some more addition info, just pm me, and try and slot something into "Early experiments"

Serendipity indeed - the mighty Applemask does an "ITV in the Face" special on ITV's night time services...

Very good... and it kinda renders this thread obsolete now

I can tell you that video had minor change done to it with the last 24hours before it went out onto youtube, since I wiki page was updated.

What missing I hear you cry, 1996/1997 Meridian and Anglia idents for overnight.

I have come across this morning:

Today 8th August 1986 is when Yorkshire TV's started broadcast 24 hours tv with the introduction at midnight of the satellite music video channel, Music Box

Arguably a much better proposition than what we have overnight on ITV1 today.

* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYaMDnBXmQg

* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZb13NdhYDM ( some bits from James whale)

* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocL5W19Ta58

* poor record: 2004: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zj63ouPLk0w

Still No sign of the 1996 - 1998 Anglia/Merd Night time idents/ promos

The first of those clips has the introduction to the "ITV Morning News" but still using the previous ITN Morning News titles, and with the previous set and graphics.

Why did the Morning News not adopt the new studio/graphics until much later (possibly around the time the ITV News Channel was launched)?

As I remember it, the Morning News didn't move into the 1999 studio until 2000.

The reason is that the old studio was cheaper to run.

What else was that studio used for in 1999 though? I know it was used towards the bulletins they did for Superchannel but surely that wound up sometime before did it not?

Not sure I think ITN World News ended as late as 1999?

Still, that's at least a year of maintaining a studio just for one early morning bulletin...

I think it ended when NBC Europe (formerly Super Channel) closed down on Satellite in 1998.
