I don't quite understand the lack of a breakfast news service on ABC1 (and back in the days of ABC TV, for the matter), despite the recent addition of News Breakfast on ABC2.

Is it because ABC1 has to fulfil PSB obligations like Play School or other stuff? OR is it due to budget restraints?

There's a variety of reasons, but it was mostly due to budgets and the fact that the children's shows rate extremely well

Is it fair to say that most Australian news presenters' ultimate dream is to be one of the Big 4 (7, 9, 10 and ABC1) Sydney early-evening bulletin presenters?
FO

I wouldn't say so. So many stay in their own cities, with their stations, for decades - Rick & Susannah at 7 Perth for 25 years, Jane & John in Adelaide for 30 years, Brisbane's Kay and Rod, etc. Most of the 6pm readers are born and bred - at least bred - in their cities. There are some quite rare exceptions - ABC Sydney's Juanita Phillips is from Brisbane, Ten Melbourne's Helen Kapalos is from Newcastle. Melbourne is notoriously difficult to break into.

The big goal, I'd say, is to host Sunrise or Weekend Sunrise . These shows give them a national profile and, of course, much more air-time. Same for other national programs like 60 Minutes, Today, Sunday Night, A Current Affair .
