Yes - iPlayer is a great brand, proven by its success to date, really.

But I think this has more to do with the service than the name.

Obviously, but branding also plays a huge part in getting the service known, especially in the word-of-mouth marketing which I think has played a large role in its success. They needed a name which stands out from their other services, and I think they chose wisely.

You can't just pick the parts of what he said to support your argument - the rest of what he said contradicts your point entirely.

I never wanted to start an argument about it, it just sounds naff and the logo looks naff to me, if others like it and it works for them, fair enough!

Well if we're going with this whole iPlayer / BBC Select thingy, why not simply call it BBC Choice?

'BBC Productions', I wonder where they got the idea of that name from

As just a "wild stab in the dark" I would think it's because the organisation is called the BBC and they made the programme. What alternative name would you suggest?

He's saying that they've copied the ITV Productions name. How did you not understand that?

I understood your erroneous assumption that ITV is the only company to add the moniker "Productions" at the end of their name to indicate the making of a programme in-house. Let's see:
Arrow CBS Productions
Arrow SMG Productions
Arrow LWT Productions

...need I go on?

But the main one here is ITV. They are the BBC's main competitor. Smile

And that somehow means they are the reason for the BBC Productions name? I think not.

If you aren't implying that, then why mention ITV is the top competitor in the first place? I should think most folks here are already aware of that!

Nothing in television is unique.

Whether it's reality dance show formats or corporate branding they all copy each other all the time - terrified they might miss the Zeitgeist.

Lets not have an organ recital over it.

You think we don't know that? The debate was whether the name was definitely copied from ITV - not whether broadcasters copy each other in general, as that's clear enough!

I very much dislike the 'me too' attitude and mindset that oft prevails in broadcasting (as I've said before), and I'd say there is really no need for a 'BBC Productions' - BBC on it's own never was a problem for many years - but at the same time there are other 'imported' ideas of much greater detriment, not least ECPs... Any lengthy ranting about that however, is for another topic! Laughing

It's also rather sloppy to leave the "repeated at 10pm" on the credits at the end of the 10pm repeat!

I've always thought that as well - it's always been like that though.

Surely it couldn't take much effort for them to make an overlay slide for the BBC Three repeat?

When they first started repeating it they made mastered 2 copies of the programme - one for BBC 1 and the other, without that caption, for BBC Choice. It ended up being very complicated.

Making it generic and putting on a caption would be less problematic, but sould annoy everyone on here as it's a IPP!
